Michael Thomas O'Loughlin, "The Artist", of Garden Valley, Idaho, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2017, at his home of natural causes. He was 65.
He was born to James Rex and Bette Jean (Vincent) O'Loughlin on December 15, 1951, in Boise, Idaho. He was the second of 6 children. He was raised in Boise and graduated from Boise High School.
Michael was an amazing artist, from simple hand drawings to large scale oil paintings, and even his models were a work of art. Michael was born with the art bug and it's all he ever wanted to do. As years went on the work became hard, and the fun of the work slipped away over time. If you know Michael, you know the amount of research he put in to any piece of art work he did. He spent a lot of time studying before he even started a painting. He would purchase clothing and other pieces as props to feel and touch for the right shading and texture captured on canvas.
Michael was born 150 years too late. He loved being in the mountains and living the quiet life. He truly looked the part of a mountain man and could live off the land if he had to, and he did a few different times in his life. He had an affinity with Native Americans and often painted their stories. Michael will truly be missed by his family and his dear friends that knew him well.
Michael was a husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents James Rex and Bette Jean O'Loughlin, his brothers Steven Rex, and Kendall Patrick, and a step-son Joseph Shaffer. He is survived by his children and step-children; Margo Shon, Rafe O'Loughlin, Misty O'Loughlin, Barbra Beck, and Shanna Perez; his brothers Scott James, and Timothy Ryan; his sister Tamira Jean; other extended family members and friendships lasting forty years or more.
A memorial service will be held on Memorial Day, May 29th at 12:00 noon. To celebrate Mike's life, Please bring your favorite potluck dish, beverages and memories of Mike to 12 Lightning Creek in Garden Valley, 7.5 miles up the MiddleFork Road.

When I was in the Air Force as a fight surgeon at Mountain home, Air Force Base, in Idaho I met Michael and bought this painting from him. I remember he was so pleased to tell me that he had mixed sage brush with the paint for the sage brush in the painting. It´s a painting that I have always loved and it has been hanging in My Home for the last 40 years.

How very odd. He was a neighbor of mine apparently. As my family owned the large property on Lightning Creek Road where the river curves. And yet, I never met him. I did know his brother Kendall who was in my class of 1977 at Boise High School. I really liked Ken a lot. He was always fun and kind. I heard he passed a few years back and quite shocked as his life seemed so vibrant. Wherever they are, I hope the two of them have reconnected in some way and have found peace and contentment in the stars. Thanks for posting this page.
