Mario Mattachione Obituary

Mario J. Mattachione 1933 – 2015

age 82 of North Canton passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 14, 2015, due to a work related accident. He was born in Canton, a son of the late Joseph and Antoinette (DeCosmo) Mattachione. He attended The Ohio State University, Akron University and Western Michigan University, earning degrees in Electrical Engineering, and Educational Administration. He was a proud veteran who loved telling his students and family his “Army stories.” He owned his own electrical business while teaching Math at Lake and then North Canton City Schools. He then became and Assistant Principal at Hoover High School, followed by becoming Principal of the North Canton Middle School. Mario earned several tributes, most notably a Distinguished Educational Leadership Award, and was recognized with an Excellence in Education Honor. He was inducted into the NCCS Hall of Distinction.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers Albert and Sam Mattachione, sisters Jean Perciballi, Mary Vertolli, and Lucy Hosner. Mario was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 58 years, Virginia R. (Meyer) Mattachione; sons Douglas and Joe (Gina) Mattachione; daughters Laura (Ed) Firth, Sue Oryszak, as well as six grandchildren Jonah and Michael Oryszak, Ellen and Ed Firth, Lynia and Samario Mattachione; sister Gloria Sikora and brother-in-law Albert Hosner. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Mario's nephew, Tommy Perciballi, who was with him to the end and demonstrates continual support to our entire extended family.
Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Rossi Family Funeral Home. Private family services will be held. Interment will be in St. Peter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Canton City Schools Educational Endowment Fund, www.northcantonschools.org, or any charity of your choice.

Mr. Matt suspended me to go get a haircut because my 'hippie' hair was too long! Despite that I always respected and liked him. He will be missed. He really liked the students, even when we were not on our best behavior. I still remember him this many years later.

We were neighbors with the Mattachiones. During the great snow storm in 77 or 78 our power was out for 4 days so no heat except a fireplace. Mario was one of 4 houses without power so he ran power from our neighbors behind each of us to our houses, We couldn't use more that one light and no electric stoves or TV, but we had light to see enough to get around the house and read. That's the kind of guy we lost 5 years ago.

There are educators who touch lives in many ways. Mario was one of a kind for his dedication and love of God and family. He was one of a kind who took seriously responsibility for his work and delivered never forgetting his influence in pupils' lives. His humor and smiles will forever be remembered. May his family find peace and solace.

I just have to add several more fond memories of Mr. Matt. Once I had a study hall filled with male athletes who knew my younger brother. The study hall was interrupted by lunch in the middle and nearly daily the guys passed gas and laughed like crazy after lunch. I got fed up with their antics and issued about a dozen detentions. Mr. Matt had them in his hand when he motioned me into his office and said, "Detentions for farting?" He suggested that I could be more creative and I determined that if they were disruptive, the next day they'd have to wait 1-5 minutes to go to lunch. It worked like a dream! Another time I was grumbling that our textbook was stupid and I'd like to throw it out the window and just teach what I wanted, especially give the students more practice in speaking Spanish rather than memorize grammar. Mr. Matt encouraged me to throw the book out the window and do what I felt was best. He was the best!

Dear Mattachione family: Mario was the best boss I've ever had. I have so many fond memories of his caring, intelligence and humor when I taught at Hoover HS. Once I sent a student to his office who had told an inappropriate joke in my class . The student 's punishment was to tell Mr. Matt the joke. I don't recall the joke other than that the punch line had Uranus in it. The student was duly embarrassed and Mr. Matt held his laughter until the student exited. I cried and hugged him goodbye in his office when he retired from the HS. A wonderful man who cared deeply about others. I'll never forget him.

In the beginning the only thing that existed was a divine spirit, formless, peaceful, and full of unconditional love. There was only infinite darkness because there was no mirror for it to see itself. The Devine spirit could feel itself, and it felt wonderful and then it had a strong desire to see itself. So, it created you, and it could see itself in you because you are the mirror. You reflected its beauty, and soon as it sees itself in you, its heart is full of love for you. The Devine spirit wants to see you again, and the desire is strong that it creates you once again in our memories as we carry you spirit through our lives. You are never alone and God will always be with you. The Devine spirit is our light, our soul, our life energy which passes through matter and creating a different form. This is the interaction of our eternal life which creates the stars and how we create matter. Matter is just a reproduction of light. And we, light, we, God, manifest in billions of different creations to explore and celebrate life. I know Uncle Mario your spirit will live forever through the energy you shared with each of us and your light will shine long past the days we are placed here temporarily to enjoy memories of you in our moments light and in life. Thank you for sharing your life moments and your refection to each of us. May you enjoy your new journey into the cosmos of life and may your spirit and energy continue to touch us. Love you, and the Mario Mattachione Family and you are in my prayers. Namaste, Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti!

August 16, 2015

My prayers and condolences go out to my dearest Laura (My Caramel sister). Though I never physically met Mr Mattachione, I knew him through Laura. Laura is not only very talented musically but like her father she is an awesome educator and could fix just about anything! I remember the stories she shared of how she shadowed her father as he displayed his craftsmanship always working on something and she makes him proud because she will not hesitate to fix it. Her love for education is also at estimate to his influence because again I would not trade the guidance and support in our educational journey. So Laura, you and your family should cherish the memories that will last forever.

You are one of the most resourceful women I have had the pleasure of working with. I am blessed to have you in my life as a coworker and a friend, never hesitating to share your vast wisdoms. I know most of your fix it skills came from your relationship with your father. So Laura, you and your family should cherish your memories and remember him for the strong man he was.
