Hazel Surber, age 87, of Whitetop, Virginia passed away and went to be with her Lord on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia.  She was born in Lansing, North Carolina on November 13, 1931 to Paul and Ossie May.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Don L. Surber; her son Donald Surber, Jr.; sisters, Ruth, Grace, Ruby, Mary and Martha; brother, Lee; and grandson, Scott Osborne.
She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha and Otis "Joe" Roop, Donna and Kerry Ruff, Margaret and Eddie Walters all of Whitetop, Virginia; brother and sister-in-law, Donnie and Donna May of Lansing, North Carolina; grandsons, Randy Osborne and wife, Sherry of Lansing, North Carolina, Joey Roop and wife, Stephanie of Whitetop, Virginia; granddaughters, Jonna McGlothin and husband, CJ of Abingdon, Virginia, Lauren Moody of Jefferson, North Carolina, and Ashley Miller and husband, Brandon of West Jefferson; great-grandchildren; Allyn, Madelyn, Landon, and Brooklyn; special caregivers, Debbie Poe, Penny Sizemore, and Sherri Jobe.
Hazel was a loving Christian woman who was very active in her community and her church.  After her retirement, she spent her days traveling with her husband and baby sitting.  She was "Mawmaw" to many children and loved each as if they were her own.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 at the Whitetop Presbyterian Church in Whitetop, Virginia by Lay Pastor, Cathy Hutton and Rev. Jimmy Williams.  Burial Rituals will be performed by The Eastern Star Chapter #182 of Abingdon, Virginia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the Byars Cemetery in Whitetop, Virginia.
Friends and family may call at the home at 1826 Old Park Road, Whitetop, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Whitetop Presbyterian Church c/o Kaye Hensley 1875 Old Park Road Whitetop, Virginia 24292.
