Ed McCown Obituary

Cheif Ed McCown
Anderson, SC
Edward Jackson McCown, 96, of Anderson, passed away on October 27, 2013.
Ed served on the City of Anderson Police Department. He joined the force in 1940 as a patrolman and was promoted through the ranks, retiring as Police Chief in 1982 after 42 years of service. Chief McCown was dedicated to his career in law enforcement and to the City of Anderson. He especially was proud of the School Boy Patrol he organized and mentored in the City Schools for many years. Chief McCown was a charter member of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association and served as their secretary for several years. He served the City continuously except for the 30 months he spent in the United States Navy during WWII on active shore patrol.
As a native of Anderson, he was a graduate of Boys' High School Class of 1935, and later attended Clemson College. He was a lifelong member of The First Baptist Church and devoted member of the Baraca Class. Ed was also a charter member of The Midday Lion's Club.
Ed was a dedicated family man, who loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Moore of Anderson; son, Jack McCown and his wife Donna of Tuscaloosa, AL; grandchildren, Andrea Moore Bach and her husband Bruce of Naples, FL, Christopher McCown and his wife Gill of Birmingham, AL, and Ellen Spann and her husband JT of Tuscaloosa, AL; and great-grandchildren Claire and Kate Bach. Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, of 67 years; parents, Samuel Augustus and Maude Payne McCown; brothers, Bert, James, Aubrey, Manning, Henry, Wallace and Bill; sisters, Maude Bowen and Cora Smith.
A funeral service for Chief McCown will be held on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at 3:30 PM at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. James Thomason officiating. Interment will follow at Old Silver Brook Cemetery. The Honorary Escort will be composed of members of the Anderson Police Department and the Baraca Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.
The family suggests that contributions in memory of Chief McCown may be made to the First Baptist Church of Anderson, Building Fund, 307 South Manning Street, Anderson, SC 29621.
