John Thomas Davis, Jr., age 87 of Anderson, SC, husband of Faye Yonker Davis, passed away on Monday, July 2. Born in Greenville, SC on February 26, 1931 to the parents of Dr. John T. and Nell Balcome Davis, John was raised in Walhalla, SC. After attending Walhalla High School and Georgia Military Academy, he graduated from Wake Forest College with a BA in Business Administration. He then served four years in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict as a naval pilot. Upon discharge, he began his 36-year career with the Southern Bell Telephone Company, Bell South, and AT&T. He held positions throughout South Carolina as Business Office Manager and retired in Anderson as Manager of Public Relations and Cooperate Affairs. John always remained active in church, community, and civic affairs. He was a Rotarian, where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. John loved the Lord, his family, and his friends. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church and faithful participate in Sunday School.
John enjoyed his hobbies. He was a distinguished watercolor painter, and was proud to have been a charter member of the South Carolina Watercolor Society. He also enjoyed his woodworking projects and writing fiction. One of his favorite hobbies was growing and creating new varieties of dahlias. John was an active member of the Carolina Dahlia Society serving as president.
John is survived by his wife, Faye, of 62 years, his two sons, John Thomas Davis, III and his wife, Johanna; Roger Timothy Davis and his wife, Diane; and his five grandsons: Tyler Davis, Brett Davis (Kelly), Andrew Davis (Meredith), Winston Davis, and Chandler Davis; his brother, Michael Davis (Kay); sister-in-law, Carolyn Davis; nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Ed Davis.
A private graveside service will be held at the Oconee Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at McDougald Funeral Home in Anderson on Saturday, July 7 from 2:00 to 3:30. Afterward, a memorial service to honor his life will be held at 4:00 in the McDougald Funeral Home Chapel.
