Michael J. Hayes
82, passed away on October 18, 2013 at McKinney House Assisted Living in Logansport, IN. He was born on November 13, 1930 to James and Gertrude Cain Hayes. On May 5, 1956 he married Margaret McLafferty Hayes, who preceded him in death. They were married for 54 years and had eight children.
Besides his wife, Mike was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter, Colleen Hayes. Survivors include his children, Shannon Hayes, Kelly (Shelly) Hayes, Casey Hayes, Brian (Carol) Hayes, Michael D. (Theresa) Hayes, Erin Ellis and Shawn (Ed) Gann; and eight grandchildren, Kyle, Alison and Kelsey Gann, Meghan and McKenzie Hayes, Grayson Ellis, and Meredith and Blair Hayes.
Mike was a Korean War veteran with the United States Marine Corps Recon unit. He was very proud to be a Marine and to serve our country. After the Marine Corps, Mike joined the Indianapolis Fire Department where he was Fireman of the Year in 1974. He retired after 36 years of service. He was inducted into the Red Cross Hall of Fame in both 1974 and 1990. Mike very much enjoyed playing the bagpipes. He was a member of the Indianapolis 500 Gordon Pipers until he started his own bagpipe band, Clan Na Gael. In addition to playing for many events, he also played for many dignitaries.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 4 p.m. followed by visitation until 7 p.m. at Daniel F. O'Riley Funeral Home . The family would like to thank the staff of McKinney House Assisted Living and SouthernCare Hospice for the wonderful care that was provided for their father. So sorry to hear of your loss. I am so blessed to have known both of your parents and always enjoyed seeing them. All of you kids take care & I hope you all have a happy extended life & many happy memories.
