Leroy is the son of William and Florence (Hooten) Hentrup. He was born June 29, 1921 in Dubois County. Leroy graduated from Harbison Township High School (Dubois, Indiana) in 1941. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1942. During World War II, Leroy served in the Southwest Pacific from 1942 - 1944. He participated in the Treasury- Bougainville Operation; the Bismarck Archipelago Operation; the defense of PIVA YOKE; the Consolidation of Northern Solomon islands, with a rank of Sergeant upon relief of active duty.

After the war, He launched his career at Mcquay Norris, division of Eaton Corporation (Indianapolis, IN) becoming the director of quality control. The company was later purchased by SKF. He retired in the early 1980's after 42 years of service.

Leroy was an avid outdoors man. He enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout North America. He had great passion and took much pride in his home gardening and landscaping. The garden was always full of fresh vegetables and beautiful flowers. His grandchildren were constantly running through the yard and exploring in the garden. Leroy could always be found sitting in his chair in the summer on his favorite porch, watching the birds, and appreciating the beauty of his back yard. Leroy was known throughout central Indiana for his gardening ability and was recognized many times by the Indianapolis Star and other periodicals. His other interests were traveling the US and watching his children and grandchildren in their sporting events.

He was the President of the Glenns Valley Conservation for many years and was a member of the St. Barnabas Parish, Knights of Columbus, and American Society of Quality Control.

Leroy was married to Rose Ann Smith July of 1954 in Vigo County, Indiana. They were married for 38 years before her death in 1992.

Dear Betty,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. As my own father progresses through his illness, I am trying to prepare, but they say you never really can. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
