David Hite Porter
94, of Greensburg, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Morning Breeze in Greensburg. He was born September 7, 1918 in Hartsville, Indiana to Dr. E.A. and Hester (Alley) Porter. He was a lifelong resident of Decatur and Ripley Counties. He had graduated from Westport High School in 1936 and Indiana University in 1953. Mr. Porter served in the United States Air Force as an officer during the Second World War. He was a basketball coach and teacher at Sandcreek High School, Jac-Cen-Del High School and South Decatur High School. In 2003 he was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame for his many accomplishments as a high school basketball coach. His lifelong passion was Indiana High School Basketball. Survivors include his wife Mary Hooker Porter of Greensburg; his sons, David Porter of Martinsville and Patrick Porter of Charlotte, North Carolina; his brother, Don Porter of Columbus; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Lucille Gaynor, Marygail Bentzen, Gene Faulkner and his brothers, Johnny, Robert and Tommy Porter. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Rev. Jon Porter officiating. Burial will be at the Union Baptist Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2013 at the funeral home.
