Susie Miller

Susie "Mimi" Miller

God blessed us with Susie Miller on December 3, 1940 and took her back home on April 25, 2013. She was known as Mimi to her friends and neighbors and known as My Bride to her husband of 48 years, Jim Miller.

Susie was born in Springfield, IL to Ann and Robert W. Olson. She grew up in Rockford, IL. Susie graduated from the University of Illinois in 1962, earned her Masters in Education from Butler University in 1968 and nearly completed her doctoral studies from Northern Illinois University. Susie and Jim raised their family in Geneva, IL before returning to Indianapolis in 2000. The entire Miller family, children and grandchildren, reside in Carmel and all live within blocks of each other.

Susie was a first grade teacher for over 30 years and taught in schools in Colorado, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois. Her last school was Willard Elementary in South Elgin, IL. She loved her team mates and all the students she taught, and they all loved her. It was in 1964, Susie was teaching in Indianapolis when she met her future husband, Jim Miller. After a 4 day courtship and 6 month engagement, they were married on April 10, 1965.

Susie and her family enjoyed traveling the world. Over the years, she and her husband spent time in more than 50 countries and 6 continents. Susie was well known for her trip letters and trip collages, which decorate their home in Carmel. These collages bring comfort and joy not only to her family, but all who have graced their home.

Susie's loving and generous spirit is a blessing to all who know her. Susie is survived by her husband, James R. Miller; their daughter, Krista Miller; son, Kevin (Kari) Miller; brother, Robert W. Olson, Jr. (partner Robert Spaulding); bonus son and daughter, Drs. Matthew and Stephanie Martin; and five grandchildren, Kelsey Bolin, Molly and Ellie Miller, Maddy and Max Martin. Susie was preceded in death by her sister, Beth Ann Nosbisch; and her parents, Ann and Robert Olson.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 18 at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's UMC.

Interment will follow at St. Luke's columbarium. Susie and their family request no flowers. Contributions can be made to St. Luke's Habitat for Humanity Project.
