Mr. Virgil Waltz

Of Greenwood, passed away on November 9, 2013. He was born on July 29th 1923 in Wirt Indiana. He was a son of Roe and Ivy Waltz.

He is survived by his wife, Elsa Waltz. Other survivors include 3 children, Gene (Nancy) Waltz, Gary (Susan) Waltz, Nancy (Mike) Robertson; 7 grandchildren, Emily, Jeff, Sarah, Becky, Katie, Darcie and Amy and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Golden; twin brother Vincent, and sisters, Thelma and Mildred.

Virgil graduated from Greenwood High School in 1941. Virgil served in the Army Air Force in the Pacific Theatre in WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart. He married Elsa L. (Stumpf) Waltz on July 14th 1945 in Indianapolis, Indiana and together had 3 children, 2 sons and a daughter.

Virgil was employed by Allison, Maywood, Dept. 3579 division of GM for 25 years before he started Waltz and Sons Machine Company in Greenwood in 1970, which he owned for nearly 30 years. He also served on the Greenwood City Council for 4 years and enjoyed coaching Little League for several years. Virgil was a charter member of Concordia Lutheran Church and also served as its Chairman. He was also a charter member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church.

Virgil and Elsa enjoyed traveling here in the United States and Internationally. Virgil was an avid Colts fan. Virgil and Elsa also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Most importantly he loved his family, and to talk about his experiences in World War II. The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses at St. Francis for the excellent care he received during his stay. He will be greatly missed by all those who loved him for his honesty, kindness and integrity.

The visitation will be on Tuesday evening in Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel , 481 W. Main Street, Greenwood from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral will be in Concordia Lutheran Church, 305 Howard Road, Greenwood, IN on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, 1977 South SR 135, Greenwood. The Reverend John Flamme will officiate.
