William Lunn Obituary

William Henry Walker Lunn, Ph.D.

William H W Lunn [Bill] died peacefully on Monday 6th March with his wife Jan at his side. He finally succumbed to the health issues he had been fighting against long and hard.

Bill was raised in Manchester, England during WWII. He pursued a degree in Chemistry at Manchester University, later moving to Montréal and obtained his Ph. D. at McGill University. There he met his dear wife, Sylviane, who worked to put him through his postdoc at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

He has endowed scholarships for chemistry students at both Manchester and McGill Universities in appreciation of the scholarships they extended to him.

He accepted a position with Eli Lilly in 1965, his last stop on a life of travels, as Indianapolis then became his home.

He had a long and successful career at Lilly as a research chemist, first in antibiotics then in central nervous system research. He was the author of many scientific publications and holds 46 patents. But he was far more than a scientist, he was also known as a talented artist accepted into the Hoosier Salon, a poet, and most notably for his legendary dry wit.

He was predeceased by his first wife Sylviane. He is survived by nephew Alex Fraser of London, niece, Joy Boxall of Surrey, sisters-in-law, Rita Kayem and Yvette Zakher of Montreal, his brother-in-law, Lionel Delacroax of Paris and his wife Jan Mattingly Lunn.

Bill, thanks from us all and Bon Voyage.

A celebration of his life will be held at Meridian Hills Country Club, 7099 Spring Mill Rd on Saturday, March 18 at 4:00.

In lieu of flowers, his family request that donations be made to the Indiana University School of Medicine. Please make checks payable to the IU Foundation-School of Medicine. Please indicate: In memory of William Lunn, for Lewy Body Dementia research 380010041. Arrangements entrusted to Flanner and Buchanan-Carmel.

Remembering Bill and Sylvianne fondly as honorary "aunt" and "uncle" to the three of us sisters. With all our "real" relatives far away across the Atlantic, Mom and Dad's good friends Bill and Sylvianne were very special to us in here North America.

I very much appreciated Bill's practical guidance and great sense of humor during the early years of my career at Lilly. He was an accomplished scientist and kind and gracious human being. To his wife, family and other loved ones, I offer my sincere condolences for your loss.

It was my privilege to have known Bill throughout his career at Lilly. We both joined the research laboratories in 1965 and retired in 1993. Yes, the Kentuckian in me really appreciated Bill's dry wit but most especially his friendship. He always had a ready smile and a humorous story for me. He will be greatly missed.

While I did not know Dr. Lunn personally at Lilly, his record of life achievement to improving human health through his knowledge and research is very formidable. His arts reflect his broad talents. Sincerely,
