David Loyd Newman Obituary
David Loyd Newman

David Loyd Newman, 82, passed on January 14, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie Newman and Jewell (Rowe) Newman; his brother, Steve Newman; sister-in-law, Peggy (Short) Blake; and two brothers-in-law, Ronnie and John Short.

Dave was a gentle, friendly, and funny man, filled with kindness and love for family, friends, and strangers alike, particularly curbside strangers in need of McDonald's fries. He attended T.C. Howe High School and graduated from Arsenal Tech in 1955. Following his service in the Army, Dave earned his bachelor's degree from the IUPUI business school. He retired in 1999 from Geupal DeMars after 33 years in their finance department.

An avid and accomplished golfer, Dave outplayed much younger players until late in life. He enjoyed numerous adventures with golf buddies over the years, especially his trip to the 2015 Masters. Dave loved many activities: banjo, martial arts, bowling, airplanes, watching tennis, IU basketball, and the Indianapolis Colts, pulling pranks and telling bad jokes, and drinking beer (although his taste ran to Miller Lite, unless a different brand was available). He spent many hours at VFW Post 98 and various southside watering holes, and was on a first-name basis with staff at both the Meijer in Avon and Indiana Grand Casino in Shelbyville. Raise a glass, but if it's less than half full, top it off first. And put all you've got on red.

Dave is survived by his soulmate, Irene Newman, sweet dog, Peyton Marie, five children and their spouses, 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless other family and friends. The family thanks all who assisted in Dave's final weeks, particularly Dana, his nurse from Premier Hospice, and loyal family friend Wanda Keith.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in tribute of our Dave at First Tee of Indiana (, a youth development program that introduces the game of golf and its values to children.
