Madge E. Herrin Obituary

Madge Eldrane Smith Herrin

December 8, 1919 - September 24, 2013

Born to Bedford and Olah Graves Smith, Eldrane, as she was called by her family, grew up on her grandparents' farm in the hills and hollows of Kentucky. At age 21, she boarded a bus to Indianapolis, and got a job at Link-Belt Bearing Plant on Michigan Street, where she met the love of her life, Quinn Herrin. Married for 64 years, they worked hard, lived frugally and built a beautiful life together. That, along with their genuine kindness and sincere generosity, made them an inspiration to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were a half-brother and sister, Harold Bartley and Carlene Kendall; her tiny great-grandson, Samuel Quinn Carpenter; and her beloved Quinn, whose loss seven years ago she mourned every day of the rest of her life. Surviving are her half-sister, Doris Johns; her son, John Quinn Herrin, Jr. (Nancy); daughter, Rebecca Herrin; granddaughters, Amy Herrin and Elizabeth Carpenter (Craig); and her perfect great-grandchildren, Grace, Ben and Claire Carpenter. Her life was a life of service to her family. She never once thought of herself first. She was dearly loved, is sorely missed and will live forever in our hearts.

Madge's family would like to express their gratitude to the residents of Caring Cove at Robin Run. Special thanks to her next door neighbors, Phil and Janet Dodd and Giselle Sharaf for their love and support - and muffins and socks. You were wonderful friends to her.

Visitation will be at Flanner and Buchanan-Speedway , Tuesday, October 8, from 12:30 until 2:00, at which time Madge's life story will be shared. A brief graveside service at Floral Park will follow. After that, all are invited to a reception in her honor at the home of her son.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Eagle Creek Park Foundation, 7840 W. 56th St., Indianapolis, IN 46254.
