Marshall Yovits Obituary

Marshall C. Yovits

Deerfield, IL - Dr. Marshall C. Yovits, 94, passed away on May 4, 2018. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 16, 1923 and grew up in Schenectady, NY. After spending the War years in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he earned his PhD in physics from Yale University in 1951.

Among his many subsequent career accomplishments was being named a Computer Pioneer by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In addition, he started and built a world-class Department of Computer and Information Science at Ohio State University and then became Dean of Science at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis. More impressive than those career milestones was his steadfast adherence to his principles and constant striving to do the right thing. Whether it was openly protesting (and disobeying) Jim Crow laws in the 1940s South, constantly giving to charity, or being utterly humble about his own talents, he served as an example for all. For most of the final 40 years of his life, he lived in Indianapolis, where he was a committed and involved member of Congregation B'nai Torah, serving for several years as president and board member and giving freely of his time and efforts. Dr. Yovits was preceded in death - by only a few months - by his beloved wife of 65 years, Anita. He is survived by his daughter Mara, sons Bruce (Nancy) and Steven (Julie), and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Shalom Memorial Park in Arlington Heights, Illinois on May 6, 2018. He will be dearly missed.
