Indianapolis - Raymond Gary Hoekstra passed away on April 7, 2018 at the Swedish Hospital Cherry Hill, Seattle, Wa. Ray was the first born child on Nov. 4, 1937 of four children to Raymond G. and Dorothy Hoekstra of Calvary Tabernacle Church of Indianapolis. He is survived by his partner, Dan Drummey, his sister, Dorothy Holland and many nieces and nephews.

Ray was born and raised in Indy and moved to California after high school. But after leaving he stayed in close contact with two sets of surrogate parents, Arthur and Mazell Schloemer and Fred and Hortence Gant here in Indy.

Raymond attended college and received his degree from UCLA. He also attended Yale University while enlisted in the Air Force to study Chinese after which he served as an interpreter in Taiwan. Ray spent many years in the travel industry hosting tours to China. He also owned a restaurant in Hollywood and opened the 1st gay bar on the Russian River in San Francisco.

Ray loved sports, especially football, racing, and soccer. He never met a stranger and enjoyed all people. He loved a party and never declined to host one. Ray was a fun-loving, outgoing, live and let live kind of a man. He recognized those less fortunate and never failed to lend a hand.

He will be missed by those who knew him.
