Stephen Howe Webb Obituary
Stephen Howe Webb

54 of Brownsburg, was born March 13, 1961 to Helen and Carl Webb of Indianapolis and departed this life on March 5, 2016.  Steve married the love of his life, Diane Timmerman, on July 16, 1988 in Chicago, and they had five children who, with their faith, were the center of their lives. Steve was a graduate of Warren Central High School where he wrote his first book, the History of Warren Central, and was an avid debater. He graduated Summa cum Laude from Wabash College and received his PhD with distinction from the University of Chicago.

He taught religion and philosophy for 25 years at Wabash and recently taught at CTS in Indianapolis and served in several prison ministries. Steve wrote over a dozen academic books on a wide range of theological topics from rhetoric to gift-giving to vegetarianism to Bob Dylan and more. In recent years, Steve published a great deal on Mormonism, including books on the LDS faith with Oxford University Press, where the majority of his books were published. Additionally, Steve wrote hundreds of essays, articles, book reviews, chapters in books, and web articles. The scope of his work was deep, original, and often provocative. He loved a good argument and loved engaging with people and ideas every chance he could get. In the past few years, he truly enjoyed his connections to the wonderful people of the LDS community.

Steve was an amazing, engaged, and loving father to his five children. He was always ready to play a game, enter into a theological debate, help with homework, or watch a movie with them.  He was a steadfast and giving husband who shared a deep bond with his loving wife. Together they enjoyed traveling the world and also just hanging out and enjoying the simple things in life.  They especially loved attending all of their children's events.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Carl and Helen Webb, his brother Tom Webb of San Francisco (wife Wenela and son Ian), his devoted wife Diane Timmerman of Brownsburg, and their children Charis, Barek, Asher, Teka, and Tsehai. Also honoring his memory are his sister-in-law Therese Hamilton (husband Donnie and daughter Eleanor), brother-in-law Charles Timmerman (wife Suzanne Edmands and daughters Calla and Meryl) and godparents of the children, Aron and Joyce Aji and Tom and Susan Darling, as well as a host of friends and family. All remember Steve for his honesty, deep faith, true friendship, and interest in others. He will be deeply missed by all.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 11 in Englewood Christian Church, Indianapolis, with reception to follow at the church.  Online guestbook at
