Joseph Leo Holland

86, of Speedway, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. He was born on November 2, 1927 in Columbus, OH to James M. and Iona May (Lombard) Holland. Joe graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School in 1945. He went on to honorably serve his country in the U.S. Army and upon his return, attended Ohio State University. A job with Allison Gas Turbine brought him to the Speedway area in 1964, he worked there as a designer for 30 years until his retirement in 1993. He was known as hard working and dependable, and was very proud to have developed 3 patents during his working career. Away from work, Joe enjoyed spending time at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and was an avid fan of the Indy 500 race. He spent many afternoons at the MCL cafeteria in Speedway and attended St. Michael Catholic Church. However, the most important thing in his life was family and he spent as much time with his grandchildren as possible. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Emily (Sessler) Holland; children, Diane (Roger) Burgan, Joe (Mary) Holland, Terry (Dave) Witzerman, Brian (Amy) Holland, Christine (Kevin) McCarley, Karen (Doug) Hanawalt and 14 very special grandchildren. Joe is also survived by brother, Jerry Holland. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jim Holland and granddaughter, Brianna Holland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael Catholic Church.
