Jack D. Praed Obituary

Jack Day Praed

82, passed away peacefully at home on October 15, 2014. Born in Newman, Illinois, on May 2, 1932, he was the oldest of four sons (Edward, Drayton and George) born to Jack and Rosalie Praed.

After a short time in Southern California as a child, he lived nearly his entire life in Indianapolis. He graduated from Shortridge High School in 1952, where he was a varsity athlete in track (sprints and long jump) and football (running back and defensive end).

He graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from John Herron Art Institute, where he met his future wife -- Shirley Waltz. They were married June 15, 1958. Jack worked as a commercial artist for a number of art agencies, and for the Department of Defense's Fort Harrison, where he retired in 1994. He was a devoted husband to Shirley, helping her run The Country Door gift shop in Danville from 1974 to 1981, where he designed and built custom hand-made country furniture. He was also a devoted father to their three children, Beth Ann (Grand Rapids, MI), Jon Linden (Arlington, VA) and Scott Joseph (Indianapolis). Prior to college, he served two years active duty in the U.S. Army in Korea, and was honorably discharged. After retirement, he continued creating art, experimenting with 3D painted clay landscapes and portraits, in addition to gardening his beloved day-lillies.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 18, at Church of the Master, 1620 N. Girls School Road, with a reception to follow from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. His remains will be interned at Arlington National Cemetery.

In addition to his wife and three children, he is survived by two brothers, Drayton and George, and six grandchildren.
