James R. Carey

83, of the Franklin United Methodist Community, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2013. He was born April 24, 1929 in Louisville, Kentucky to William Hobart Carey and Lola (Adkinson) Carey. He married Carolyn A. (Burdsall) Carey on March 8, 1957 at First Baptist Church in Franklin, she survives. He was a 1948 graduate of Franklin High School, and a 1956 graduate of Franklin College while attending there he worked for Franklin Swimming Pool. He then he received his masters degree and administration license from Ball State University in 1962. From 1956 till 1986 he was part of the South Madison Community School Corporation where he was the first Principal of Pendelton Junior High School. He also coached High School Baseball and Jr. High Basketball at Pendleton. He also was an IHSAA Basketball Referee. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Optimist Club in Pendleton and was a fifty year member of Franklin Masonic Lodge #107. Mr. Carey was an Army Veteran of the Korean War where he recieved two Bronze Stars. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn A. (Burdsall) Carey of Franklin; two sons, Andrew J. Carey (Perian) of Indianapolis and Scott D. Carey of Pendleton; a grandson, Quinten James Carey of Pendleton; and a sister, Wanda Garcia of Greenwood; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Katherine Setser and Betty Wood. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2013 at Swartz Family Community Mortuary And Memorial Center , 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin. Friends may call Thursday, April 18, 2013 from 5-8 p.m. at the mortuary. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin with full military honors. Online condolences may be sent to the family at
