John Lawler Porteous, Jr.

A WWII Army veteran, passed away on April 22, 2013. He was born in Dallas, Texas on April 23, 1924 to the late John L. Porteous, Sr. and Rita Hunter Porteous.

John attended Texas A&M and graduated from Purdue University, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was employed by the Allison Division of General Motors for over 37 years, where he worked on various aircraft engine and tank transmission projects by serving as a liaison between Allison and the military.

John was a person of many interests. He was an avid photographer, ham radio operator, had a keen interest in computer technology, and enjoyed working on antique clocks and watches. He was a life member of USAC and for many years John and his father worked on the Technical Committee at the Indianapolis 500.

He was very proud of his Scottish heritage and was a life member of the Scottish Society of Indianapolis. John was Master Mason from the North Park Masonic Lodge #646, a proud Shriner, and was a member of the Scottish Rite. He served as an Elder and a Deacon at Second Presbyterian Church and was on the Indiana Council of the National Association of Investors Corporation.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Merrell Lee Jones Porteous; two sons, John L. Porteous III (Leslie) and Thomas H. Porteous (Joanie); a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Parkes (Scott); two granddaughters, Sarah C. Porteous and Emily A. Porteous and his two sisters, Mary Ann Bergoch and Jean Steele. He was predeceased by his beloved dog and best buddy, Gus.

A private family memorial service will be held.

At John's request, friends and family are invited to a gathering at the Overlook Clubhouse on Wednesday April 24, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the USAC Benevolent Fund, the Masonic Home in Franklin, IN or to St. Vincent Hospice.
