Born July 23, 1916 in Greensburg, IN, Katherine was the daughter of John and Irma Cory Douglas. She died Aug. 14, 2013, only days after her 97th birthday. Katherine had a brother, William Joseph, who died in infancy.

After his death in May, 1965, Katie was employed at Butler University for 21 years in several roles, retiring as secretary to Chris Theofanis, director of public relations, in 1986. It was said at Butler that "everyone knew Katie Deer's smile." For years after retiring she saw her Butler friends regularly for lunch. An experienced seamstress, Katie was known for the beautiful tailored suits that she sewed and wore, often with a favorite brooch on the lapel.

Katie was a long time member of the church's banner committee stitching baptismal banners and helping craft beautiful worship banners for the Sanctuary. She was a registered Daughter of the American Revolution, a member of Delta Theta Tau national philanthropic sorority, and a former PTO president at John Strange School. As a Girl Scout leader Katie was elected to the board of directors of the Hoosier Capital Girl Scout Council, serving as chairman of the Program Services Department. In her extended family, all the children knew her as "Grandma Katie."
