NICHOLAS KARABOTS Obituary

KARABOTS NICHOLAS G. Of Fort Washington, passed away peacefully on Monday February 1, 2021. He was 87 years old. Born July 11, 1933 in Englewood, NJ, he was the son of the late George and Constance (nee Chrisomalis) Karabots, and the beloved husband and soul mate of Athena (nee Dikegoros) Karabots, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. To everyone who knew "Nick" Karabots both personally and professionally, he left an indelible mark. Nick's strength of personality and endearing ability to connect with people, both young and old, paved the way for a life filled with great accomplishment, and the joy and happiness that can only be found by one who loves others and is loved in return. Whether he was with friends, colleagues or creating learning opportunities for the youth of the City of Philadelphia to whom he wanted to lend a helping hand, Nick always thought of himself as just a "kid from the Bronx". The essence of Nick Karabots is best reflected in the pride he had in his "Spartan" heritage and the strength of purpose he gained from both witnessing the struggles of his parents as first generation Greek immigrants, and from his own spartan childhood growing up on the streets of NYC. After serving his country in the United States Navy, Nick married the love of his life Athena, and with nothing more than a high school diploma, an innate self-taught business sense and unmatched work ethic, he began his life's journey that in time became filled with both business and philanthropic accomplishments. Nick's passion to build and create led to the formation of a long and varied list of businesses in the printing, publishing, golf course, vineyard and real estate arenas. Although Nick always kept a razor sharp focus on his business interests and set a very high bar for all of his colleagues to strive for, one of Nick's most rewarding achievement was the work of The Nicholas & Athena Karabots Foundation helping those less fortunate. His greatest pride however was his loving family who he cherished and adored. Those lucky enough to have known Nick Karabots will never forget him. His lasting legacy is his loving wife Athena, his devoted family, life-long friends, loyal business colleagues, and countless others who will forever remember Nick's gap-toothed smile, the gleam in his eye, his masterful negotiating style, his demand for one's best effort, his perpetual attention to detail, and his spirit of living life to its fullest each and every day. His life and memory has made this world a better place. In addition to his wife Athena, Nicholas is survived by his 3 daughters Andrea Duloc (Michael), Despina McNulty (Joseph), and Constance Kolkka (Paul); ten grandchildren: Alecia Jankowski (Matthew), Zachary Duloc (Stephanie), Andrew McNulty (Kate), Christopher McNulty (Anne), Kara McNulty, Nick Kolkka, Stefan Kolkka, Griffin Kolkka, Sophia Kolkka and Caliope Kolkka; great grandchildren; Kennedy McNulty and Zoe Duloc, and his sister Despina Fassuliotis (William). He was preceded in death by his sister Anna Agrian and his brother Christos Karabots. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be no public Viewing or Service. A private Service will be held for Mr. Karabots at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church followed by a private interment. Mr. Karabots' service will be Live Streamed through St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/saintsophiachurch at 11 AM on Thursday February 11. Our deepest condolences to Mrs. Karabots and the entire family. I only learned of Mr. Karabots passing today and was very saddened but fortunate to have known him. In my brief time as his GM at the “ J “ I appreciated his drive for all to excel and loved his humor. A wonderful mentor for sure. Hopefully there are plenty of peanut butter pretzel nuggets in Heaven! RIP Mr. K !

Met him while I was a senior finance guy in a related business. He was a happy individual, laughing, joking, and I wasn't sure if the meeting was going well untill Nick said come let me show you the winery and he asked the senior salesperson to jump in the backseat -) of the modest car a long continental style, custom car. He was proud of his achievements, his wife, his planes and the donkey ride in Greece. Sad he is gone but am sure he left a strong legacy behind to continue some of his great human attributes.

I was saddened to hear of Nick's passing from the Covid Virus. I worked with Nick for almost 9 1/2 years (January 1995 - June 2004) at Spartan as well as building out Jericho National Golf Club, selling real estate across from the Club and ultimately opening and working at the Club. Nick was an amazing man. He challenged you. He motiviated you. He encouraged you. You had to earn his trust by devoting yourself to the organization. I have many memories that I will cherish and like others, I am sorry I did not get a chance to touch base with him. It was also a joy to meet and get to know Athena and the immediate family. Sending my thoughts and prayers to all as we, together, remember Nick Karabots! Peace!

Dear Athena, Andrea, Des, Connie and the entire Karabots Family,
My heart like yours is broken...but will always treasure my almost 40 years as an employee and friend. Nick was truly one of the Greatest Man I have ever had the privilege of knowing and loving! His smile was infectious. He was my greatest mentor. There will never be enough words to describe this man...he truly was a legend. His love for his family was one of the things I admired most. The way his face would light up at the sight of his beautiful Athena. He was also so humble and never forgot where he came from. And would treat his highest executive to the employee working in the plant with the same respect. I still can't believe your gone...rest in peace my dear Nick

Uncle Nick has been as important to me through my entire life, as my parents were. A second father to me, in many ways. His opinions and advice always affected me deeply. From childhood memories on Pine Tree Lane, to the last wild golf cart ride through the vineyards with the steering wheel in one hand and his shotgun in the other, I cherish my 60 years of memories. The birthday when your family got him a coffin shaped cigarette holder to get him to stop smoking - which got my dad to stop smoking, too. His laughter. And yes, his gap toothed smile, which my mom also had. It is with great love and sorrow that I mourn his passing.

Dearest Boss! How I miss our banter over your morning coffee and see who would smile 1st! I miss you sneaking around the corner and sticking your tongue out at me and laughing all the way back to your office or you calling Sharonitza (my Greek name) accross the office. I am so grateful to you for all of your help/advice/mentoring/kindness/respect over the last 32 years! I loved it when your eyes would light up when Mrs. K would come over and the two of you would spar a little - what a wonderful love story of 65 years! I loved that smile when your daughters/son-in-laws/grandbabies came into your office to see you as well. You/Mrs. K/Andi/Des/Connie and their families are my Greek family and we will never forget all the help and love you gave my family and I. Thank you also for the joy of working with you on the different projects for your charities and how you helped so many people and children throughout your life. It was an honor and a privilege to be called your Assistant and yes I miss you horribly!

Dear Athena, Andrea, Des and Connie,
I knew Nick for over 40 years as both an employee and friend and there was no one more loyal to his family, friends and employees then NK. We had many good times in Florida after a hard days work and then a fun dinner with Nick and Athena. Then right back to work the next day. Jane and I feel honored and privileged to have known him and will miss him very much.
As Chuck's wife, Jane, I would also like to send my condolences to Andrea, Des, Connie , all of your families, and especially Nick's very special Athena. With tears of sadness, as well as a very loving smile, I remember this very brilliant, amazing, and interesting gentleman, who became such a special part of Chuck's and my ( as well as our son, Chris, and our daughter, Lynn ) lives. We are forever grateful and will hold Nick and his beautiful family in our hearts forever. With lots of love and sympathy, Chuck and Jane

It was through my father, George Paul, that my wife and I reached out to Mr. Karabots. My father and he had met very early on, in the 1950’s, in Connecticut and I thought to contact him a few years ago. He invited us out to visit and we were treated to a grand tour of the grounds including the wine making facilities. We also had a wonderful lunch together. He and Mrs. Karabots were so kind and we think of that visit often. So, it was with incredible sadness when we discovered the news of his having passed away. Our love and sympathy go out to Mrs. Karabots and family. May his spirit live on in every one of us he has touched.

I have known Nick and Athena for many years from their frequent visits at the Blue Bell Inn. He has known my husband even longer since Scott is the owner and was manager a long time ago. Every time I heard Nick and Athena were in for dinner I couldn’t wait to see them and say hello. I will miss his warm smile and laughter. I loved listening to him and his wife banter with each other even after 60 plus years of marriage. One could see how in love they were. I loved Nick’s sense of humor and always enjoyed his company. I am so sad by the news and knowing I won’t see him at the Blue Bell Inn. His presence would light up the room. He was an amazing person and businessman and he will be missed by many people. To his family-I’m so sorry for your loss.

The Barr Family sends their love and prayers during this time of loss. It was very clear how Pappous Karabots was a pillar of strength, generosity and influence not only to the entire family but to the communities he served. We admired the concern and love he displayed for each of you and it was inspiring to witness his love for Athena.
We hope your grief is quickly replaced with the understanding that while life is temporary, Pappous memories and love will never end. They live on forever in your hearts and minds, and most importantly within your spirit.
