SAMUEL WURTZEL Obituary

WURTZEL
SAMUEL

On March 8, 2017. Sam lived a purposeful and accomplished life right up to the moment he died peacefully in his adopted Kentucky home. Sam, as he was known to his family, clients and countless friends from Philadelphia to Madisonville, KY to Captiva, FL was engaging, generous and boundlessly curious. He was an entrepreneur and innovator in investing, insurance and private wealth management. Sam was born in Rosenhayn, NJ and grew up in Philadelphia. He was a proud graduate of Central High School, and a 1958 business graduate of THE Penn State. An accomplished trumpetist and aspiring jazz musician, life circumstances demanded he pursue a more practical career path. Same began working at Provident Mutual as a recruiting and training supervisor; he led the number one agency by 1963 and was eventually President of the Field Force. He established Financial Security Analysts (which served his customers for 50 years) and made Million Dollar Round table for 40 years, and Top 50 member for 25 years. Sam holds multiple degrees in advanced financial planning, and taught at both the American College of Underwriters and Temple Dental School.
Having lost his father at 17, Sam went on to become the father, husband and grand-father others did not have. His deep passion for his family and the many ways he could inspire each of them toward daily self-improvement in mind, body and spirit were his life's mission. Sam was an ardent corres-pondent, and if you met him even once you were likely to receive a lifetime of newspaper articles and clippings perfectly suited to your interest. His mastery of vast swaths of knowledge was legend - a font of semi-useless knowledge, as he termed it.
Sam is predeceased by his parents, Anna and William Wurtzel and his daughter Wendy, and by his beautiful wife of 45 years, Phyllis. He is survived by his sister Alma, his beloved wife Shirley Spence PhD, and her children Bob Harvey, Sean Spence, Marisa Sample and her daughters Chloe and Peyton. He is the devoted father of David Wurtzel (Muna El-Shaks), Lisa Raiola (Waterman Brown), and Michele Bokun (Scott), and loving grandfather of Austin and Stefanie Raiola, Abby and Lilly Bokun, Billy and Galena Wurtzel, Rachel Kachnycz, and Ardy Wurtzel.
Relatives and friends are invited to Funeral Services Sunday, 11 AM precisely GOLDSTEINS ROSENBERGS RAPHAEL-SACKS, 6410 N. Broad St. Int. Montefiore Cem. Shiva will be observed at his late residence with Minyan at 5 P.M. Sunday, and shiva observance 4 to 7 P.M. Monday and Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the World Jewish Congress.

I last saw Sam in May 2004 at our 50th Central High School reunion, which he organized. He and Phyllis did a remarkable job and all of the attendees had a wonderful experience. Sam was always energetic, witty and a conversationalist, traits that made him successful in his career. I know that his Central High classmates will miss him very much.

What a wonderful man! The first time I met Sam, I knew he was special. His smile could light up a room and his personality was captivating and mesmerizing. When you were blessed to be in his presence, he treated you as if you were the only person on the planet. Shirley, God really blessed you over these past years. Sam adored you and it was obvious. May the Choirs of angels come to greet him and take him to the new and eternal Jerusalem where there will be no more weeping or wailing or gnashing of teeth! God rest his sweet soul snd grant comfort to Shirley and the family.

Sam was a delightful conversationalist! He always made me smile and most of the time made me laugh! He came into our small Madisonville, Kentucky store (Happy's) to ship packages to family and friends. He had quite the sense of humor albeit dry, which happens to be my preference! I will miss him greatly!
