I first Met Johnny in 1971 at a Malibu beachouse clambake put on by Bill and Sunny from Donte's Jazz Club.

I had just returned to the states after a year long jazz gig in the Canary Islands where Jimmy Gourley and Don Jetter told me to be sure to say hello to Johnny and Sweets Edison. I remember thinking "Are they kidding? I'll never meet those guys. I met Sweets at a Buddy Collette gig in San Diego and said hello from Don and Jimmy. Then three weeks later at the clambake when the doirbell rang at the beach house and I opened the door and a man put his hand out and sai "Hi, I'm Johnny Mandel. My jaw dropped and he laughed even harder after I gave him Don and Jimmy's message. I knew Johnny later as well when he and his longtime friend David Allyn were in touch. Saw Johnny at Gibson Jazz party in the 80's when we talked about David.
A wonderful musician, giant of a composer and really genuinely nice person has left. I live all his compositions.

There are no words that anyone could say at this difficult time, yet it was very sad to hear that we have lost a talent Oscar - and Grammy winning songwriter Johnny Mandel that he composed songs including the "M*A*S*H" theme ("Suicide is Painless") and "The Shadow of Your Smile and I do remember when i was growning up my family watched M*A*S*H it was funny, made us laugh especially Klinger played by Jamie Farr who dress up as lady trying to get the army along the final episode to and I love the music. He will be missed and never be forgotten. My thoughts, prayers are with you.

At one time, years ago, Johnny Mandel arranged for THE ELLIOT LAWRENCE ORCHESTRA. I think Elliot Lawrence helped him on his way. Had an album with Tiny? a drummer I believe, once, but can't find it . Mr. Mandel did the arrangements.
