I miss you today, reading your underlined version of Jung’s autobiography, wearing your onyx ring, all the everyday thoughts feelings we shared.

MIRIAM LONG KANEV- mother, psychologist, teacher, photographer
Miriam Long Kanev born 2/16/24 in Rutherford, N.J., earned a B.A. from NYU and an M.A. in Psychology from Temple University. Fascinated with the process of human life and behavior, she worked in research in a biology lab, before beginning her studies and original work in psychology.
She studied death and dying with Elizabeth Kubler Ross, developed a program on the Crone based on Jung's concept of the wise woman, and taught workshops at the YMHA and around the country. The role and experiences of women, the process of aging, the consciousness of children, were areas of concern throughout her life. Her empathy and compassion was always there for those who needed a helping hand.
With her late husband, Charles Kanev, a plastics manufacturer in Philadelphia, she raised three children, Paul, Carl and Ann before settling in the Rittenhouse Square area of Philadelphia. In her late 70s, Miriam, picked up a camera and did portrait studies of elderly women. In these large black and white photos, close enough to display all imperfections, she wanted to show the beauty and character of age, largely denied by our youth obsessed culture.
An arts group she belonged to, Art & Spirituality, now ArtWell, recommended her to social action projects in need of a photographer and she was happy to volunteer her time and talent. In the early pre-digital days of Philly's Magic Gardens, Miriam documented in black and white workers of all ages busily embedding ceramic. When she was contacted by an interfaith poetry workshop for Muslim and Jewish children, she was struck by how naturally those children exchanged feelings and words.
The group entered the photographs for an event honoring social action in Barcelona. Miriam went to Barcelona in her 80s, invited to show her work but didn't consider herself an artist. She was there to help out people doing something to better the world.
From a bench in Rittenhouse Square, Miriam liked watching couples interact, joyous children, funny dogs; the color of flowers, the shape of trees. The smell of the ocean was always new. She will be sorely missed by her son Carl Kanev, daughter-in-law Susan Weinstein Kanev, her son Paul Kanev and beloved Pamela Senatore, and her grandsons Ian Kanev and Charles Kanev. Her kindness and encouragement, wit, and careful thought touched many people

Miriam was the sweetest and most sincere woman I have ever met. I work at the hair salon that she always came to in the Rittenhouse Hotel. I had the pleasure of chatting with her many times. I always admired how independent she was at her age. I used to love seeing her get out in the nice weather and walk around the park . She had such a wonderful eye for fashion and she always carried herself with such class. I am going to miss seeing her visiting us in the salon but I feel at peace knowing that she had such a full and long life. I am praying for her family during this sad and difficult time. We will miss you, Miriam >3

Dear Paul and Carl and family, Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss of your mother. Miriam was an important friend to me. Her warmth and intelligent support to me and my art were valuable gifts to me. I thought of her as not only a dear friend, also as a mentor, guide and role model of a strong, creative, and independent woman. I will miss her too. Sincerely, Josephine Viviani
