Bill McVean Obituary

1925 to 2021 We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Bill McVean, who died on March 21 following complications from multiple strokes. Bill was born on May 5, 1925 in Windsor, Ontario to Marion and Ernest McVean. He was educated in Woodstock, Ontario before serving with 411 RCAF spitfire squadron in France, Belgium and Holland. The war's end found him in Germany, where he relieved the boredom by editing an armed forces newspaper and managing a radio station. After his return to Canada Bill studied journalism and became news editor at Radio station CKNX in Wingham, Ontario. A year later he married highschool sweetheart Catherine Flood and moved to Hamilton, Ontario to radio station CKOC (1949 to 1955), then CHML (1955 to 1960). While at CKOC Bill became the first person in the world to do live aerial traffic reports from an airplane which he also piloted. He had begun flying at age 12 under the instruction of First World War fighter pilot Tom Williams. In 1960 Bill began his storied career at CFRB radio in Toronto, where he was a fixture until 1986. During his time at CFRB Bill did stints at CBC television and narrated and performed in many aviation films, while also appearing in TV commercials. Aviation was a huge part of Bill's life. He helped get Buttonville Airport off the ground, from a grass strip to a viable airport. A licensed commercial pilot with all of the endorsements, he flew more than 60 types of aircraft, from CF-5 fighters to Lear and Citation jets to First World War fighters. It was while piloting one such aircraft, a Nieuport Scout replica at an air show in North Bay, Ontario, that disaster struck when a structural failure caused him to crash, completely destroying both him and the aircraft. Miraculously, he survived after being airlifted to Toronto. During his six-month hospital recuperation his room was wired so that he could continue doing his CFRB show from his hospital bed. For more than 20 years Bill was the man in charge of the Canadian International (CNE) Air Show. Beginning as the show's announcer/emcee, he became Director and was also on the CNE's board. He was well known among the leadership of the world's air forces, visiting the Pentagon frequently. On one such visit the general he was with pointed out that a Canadian McVean had received the Congressional Medal of Honour during the Civil War, fighting with the Union forces. That McVean, Peter, was actually a relative from Toronto. Travel was also a major part of Bill and Catherine's lives, and it spawned the syndicated radio feature "Trips 'n' Tips", written and produced by Catherine and voiced by Bill. The show was aired five times a week on 23 Canadian stations. Content was provided by a non-stop whirlwind of world travel and interviews. Catherine and Bill were founding members of the Travel Media Association of Canada. Bill and Catherine have two sons: Michael and Jaimie, four grandchildren: Jenny (Mark), Alex (Rachel), Samantha (Ibrahim) and Nathan, and one great grandchild (Jenny and Mark's new daughter Margot). Bill leaves friends from across Canada and the world. He will be remembered for his kindness, gentle sense of humour, decency and beautiful 'radio' voice. That voice is now silent, but it will echo in our hearts. There will not be a service, but feel free to remember him for a minute and smile. No flowers please, but if you like you can make a donation to your favourite charity.

I only heard recently that Bill had passed. He was quite the gentleman and a great narrator and broadcaster.
Back in the day when I was skywriting, and gave Toronto-the-Good its 'halo' as part of an environmental art exhibit, I did a radio show with Bill and talked about the ancient art of putting on a parachute and )2 bottle then jumping into a powerful single engine airplane and screaming up to some 19,000 feet and looping and spinning through the alphabet to send a message to somebody, or everybody. Those messages ranged from radio station call signs to "Will You Marry Me, Carol" to hearts and initials.

It was a good interview and Bill got lots of feedback. I took him flying as I recall. He was a good pilot himself.

I think skywriting was better messaging than Whatsapp and Facebook. lol
But in Toronto there are only about 20 days in a year when an unfettered big blue sky occurs without too much wind aloft to blow the art to Texas in a moment. heh heh
So there's a lot be said for digital messaging too. Digital messaging burns much less of the mean-green av-gas.

I will continue to remember you, Gentleman Bill.
Bless you Bill. Rest in peace, old friend.

I met Bill and Catherine at Max Ward’s camp on Red Rock Lake several summers over the years, during the ‘Tigers’ Camp.’ He was a friend of my parents, Doug and Peggie Matheson.
He was always so curious, fun and kind, and had the amazing ability to get along with everybody. I also remember that he could laugh at himself, a lovely and rare quality.
My condolences to the McVean clan, and Catherine in particular

So sorry to hear about Bill. Initially, as a teenager, I knew Bill as that smooth 'voice' on CFRB, the station my family always listened to. A few years later I got to know Bill through the CNE and then the Canadian International Air Show. I still have his letter congratulating me on being named Director of Public Relations for the Air Show. Such a gentleman. He always had a story and was keen to share his experiences, especially in aviation. He was also very supportive and kind when I got into the broadcast industry. Bill served his country with distinction through the RCAF then had an amazing career in broadcasting, board work and then his travel show. Rest easy Bill. My sincerest condolences to Catherine and family.

Hi Mike;
I was so deeply saddened to read of the passing of your Dad. I remember him so fondly, from stories from my own Mum, Jill --- who worked with him at CFRB for so many years --- and from my own meetings with the special man! I indeed remembered him and smiled, before I read the note to do so. What a full, long and wonderful life he led. And so many are richer to have known him. I am thankful to have met him! My sincerest sympathies to all your family at this time. I will raise a glass in Bill's honour. He will be near and dear in your hearts forever. Best to you. Carrie

Such sad news.
In the early 1980s, I was a young Humber Broadcast student with an assignment to do. My task was to interview some radio personalities.
I interviewed Bill and he was terrific. Humble, warm and informed, his remarks really ‘lifted’ my assignment.

Additionally, in CFRB’s heyday, our kitchen radio, a pink rotary-dial, Bakelite appliance, showcased Bill’s programs often.

Saddened to learn of Bill McVean’s passing. My condolences to his family, friends and his radio colleagues.

Fly high, Bill.

I was fortunate to meet Bill in 1982, following a referral from Mike, although I was familiar with his smooth voice from hearing my Mom listen to CFRB for years. We connected right away. He was interviewing me for a job with the Canadian International Air Show and if it weren't for Bill, I would not have the wonderful friends and memories that I have made over the last 38 years with the show. He took a chance on me and I will be forever grateful. Bill was the epitome of kindness, loyalty, humour and a true gentleman. I will think of him often and miss him always.

I never really knew Bill and Catherine as they were of my parents ages but I do believe that Michael or Jamie did cross the road the odd time in the winter to skate on the ice in the gully. We were the neighbours across the road (Regans) at 236 Watson. McVeans moved into the Bruce Etherington home (probably239 Watson) in the late 50 s or early 60's.
Our condolences to the McVean family.

Bill was a hero to me in my teenage years when his warm voice and quiet wit were reassuring and inspiring. In the mid-70s we became business partners of sort - I wrote the radio commercials and Bill delivered them perfectly. We lost touch so many years ago but in my memory he remains a hero, in his unique manner. My deepest condolences to his family.

Please accept my condolences in Bill's passing.....As a young Sales rep back in the late 60's-early 70's Bill kept me entertained every afternoon as I drove from call to call......He was a legend at CFRB. There was a time that I had met his Son Mike, who at the worked for a Foodservice Magazine, I don't think Mike realized how well known his Father was......RIP Bill, you made this world a better place..

I met Catherine on a travel media trip to Sicily. That it turn led to being introduced to Bill, as Catherine mischievously recounted embarrassing incidents that befell us on that trip. Always a gentleman of the 'old school,' Bill never failed to greet people with genuine enthusiasm and caring. He was just full of life, appreciating everything and everyone around him. You're a good man, Bill. We're going to miss you.

We lived next door to Bill and Catherine for seven years during the late 70's, early 80's. We were regular listeners to CFRB and often heard Bill's comments on some topic or other that he had tried out on us beforehand. Were also happy to entertain their cats whenever they chose to visit. Although we live in Toronto now, it is still nice to see their house still standing while ours and so many others have been replaced. Our condolences to Catherine and the rest of the family.

My family lived across the McVean's for 18 years, and we went to OTHS with his sons. As a teenager, I remember asking him questions about careers in radio, and he visited our school to give a presentation and answer questions with kindness and encouragement.

One time during heavy snow and ice-storm, Dad and I decided to help our neighbours with our snowblower (Bill was in recovery from an accident, broadcasting from home). Numerous phone calls after Bill thanked us on-air (!) showed us the breadth of his appeal and how he was affectionately regarded.

Once, frustrated with our Town's inability to properly fix a blocked rainstorm drain, a photograph of Mike and Jamie paddling their canoe down the middle of the street did the trick.

Lastly, Bill rescuing a neighbour's dog caught in a fence, which resulted in him having to undergo very painful injections as a rabies precaution.

Many fond memories of a great guy and his family.

Through our old friend Mike, Bill's son, my wife Toni and I were fortunate to get to know Bill and his lovely wife Catherine when we lived in Toronto in the 1980s. He was a true 'old school' gentleman who never had an unkind word to say about anyone. And that voice! Smooth as silk. We should all be so lucky to live such a full, accomplished and adventurous life. Safe travels, Bill !
