It is with deep sadness, we announce that on Wednesday, March 10, 2021, Marie Jeanette "Jane" Fisher, beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, passed away at the beautiful age of 98.
Jane was born on August 8,1922, in Lone Pine, California to Earl and Marie Hurlbut, the oldest of three children. She attended Occidental College in Whittier, California and although WWII interrupted her college years, it afforded her the opportunity to meet a young pilot training nearby.
Jane married Robert Williams Fisher, on April 15, 1943 in Independence, California. Together they raised three daughters, Ann Corinne, Debra Jayne and Nancy Louise. In addition, Jane had a lifelong career in public service serving as the City Administrator and then Mayor of the City of Bishop, California. She was an activist for water rights, a founding member of the local junior college and an active member of her community.
She then went on to enjoy a career as a journalist, poet and writer, a passion she pursued all her life.
For many years, she was a reluctant companion to an avid backpacker exploring the Sierra and Cascade mountains and the desert lands of Eastern California. She finally left her beloved home in the Owens Valley and moved to Colorado to be with her daughters. Surviving her husband, Jane found love and friendship with Ed Clifton who remained her loyal companion for the rest of his life.
Jane was preceded in death by her father, Earl Hurlbut, her mother, Marie Hurlbut, her brother, Carl Hurlbut, her husband, Robert Fisher, her companion, Ed Clifton, her daughter, Debra Davidson and her great-grandson, Niko Wheeler.
She is survived by her sister, Mazie Myrick, her daughters, Corinne Brown and Nancy Covington; her grandchildren, Ananda Ripple, Nova Covington-Halter, Cheyenne Covington, Oneea Wheeler, Maya Willis-Tindall, Tejo Willis, Alexis Cameron and their families; many great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and dear friends.
A memorial will be held at a later date.
THE JUNIPER TREE IS ME by Jane Fisher
At the hour of truth
At the dawning of dawn
When dreams have revived old lives
At the core of your soul,
Who is the you who is really you?
The essence of I who am I?
The Juniper tree is me, I think
Incensed and sensuous
Sun warmed pine,
Some slightly implied bitter lemon
And a fruit not usually used;
Strong and twisted
And bent with the wind,
Shaggy of bark and golden of heart;
An island alone in a granite sea.
Yes.
When it comes to the essence of I who am I
The Juniper tree is me.

Jane had a bohemian soul of romantic dreams & notions. She colored her life the way she wished it was. She lived & loved happily through each chapter. She was a delightfully fun friend.

Jane was a friend, and a mentor to my husband, Frank Crom, who worked with her, and then served on the City Council with her. But one special memory I will forever remember happened on a Christmas Eve. We have had an annual Christmas Party at our home for about 40 years. One year, it was my Mother's last year on this earth, and we were honored that she lived it with us. She sat on the sofa, and Jane sat down beside her and they had a wonderful hour or so talking about life. They were both born in 1922, and shared many similar experiences, especially during WWII. Later in the evening, Jane said her good-byes. My Mother caught her name being mentioned, and turned to our daughter Dana, "Oh, I love Jane Fisher, I get the paper just to read her column. Is she here?" To which Dana said, "Grandma, that's who you've been talking to for the last hour!" If you've ever seen that movie, Romancing the Stone, my Mothers reaction was just like that scene....she said, "JANE FISHER!!, JANE FISHER...that was JANE FISHER!!!??? I can't believe it....I love Jane Fisher!"

It was a funny scene..but, it was exactly how so many of us will remember Jane Fisher; bigger than life,a stunningly beautiful, literate, educated, and a sophisticated woman who was admired by all, and adored by her many fans! One in particular!

Our condolences to her many surviving family members. You all have the blood of a true original in your veins!
