Major Owen R. Helm, Jr., USA RET., CET, SRWA was born on December 19, 1929 in Fresno, CA and passed away on Monday, June 13, 2016 in Fresno, CA.
He retired from the California Army National Guard after 30 years of service including many tours of active duty. He also retired from CALTRANS as a Senior Right of Way Agent after 42 years of service. He was also a retired self-employed farmer. He graduated from Central Union High School in 1947 and went on to attend Fresno State College. He was a Senior Member of the International Right of Way Association holding the SR/WA designation as well as being a Senior Certified Engineering Technician.
Major Helm was the officer in charge and coach of the All National Guard (National) Pistol Squad and trained many individuals who won many National and International pistol marksmanship awards. He was a Lifetime Pistol Master Shooter, was awarded the Distinguished Marksmanship Badge and the President's Hundred Award at the National Matches at Camp Perry, OH. He was a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, KS.
Owen is survived by his sons, "Rick", Frank, John and Scott; daughter, Linda and 13 grandchildren. He is also remembered by his many friends when he was employed by CALTRANS for 12 years in Bishop, CA and members of the American Legion.
Services will be held at Stephens and Bean Funeral Chapel, 202 N. Teilman Ave., Fresno, CA on Monday, June 20, 2016 at 10:00am with a graveside Military Service following at Belmont Memorial Park. Remembrances may be made to the
charity of your choice.
