Cora Rupp Obituary

Cora J. RuppCora J. Rupp died October 4th, 2012 in Alexandria, Virginia. She was 79 years old. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 8th, 1933 to Helen and Donald Peterson. She was a big sister to Christine Hastings, whom she loved dearly, and an adoring niece to her aunt, Jessie Hunter. She married Air Force Lieutenant Colonel William Albert Rupp (ret.) on December 1st, 1955. As a military wife, she travelled with her husband throughout Europe and the United States. They settled in the Washington, D.C. area where they raised three children, David and the twins, Christine and Stephen. She had three grandsons, Matthew, William, and Jack and took pride and pleasure in hearing about them and seeing them. She was a professional artist and worked in many mediums throughout her life, most recently doing oil-based monotypes. She was one of the original artists in the Torpedo Factory Art Center when it was established in Alexandria, Virginia in 1974. She had a working studio there for many years. From 1996 to 2011, she was a member of Printmakers, a workshop and gallery at the Torpedo Factory that houses printmakers of many types. She was a successful arts administrator and served as president of The Art League in the seventies becoming its first executive director in 1981. She held that position until her retirement on December 31, 1996. During her tenure she oversaw the growth of The Art League's membership, staff, and school, which currently serves over 7000 students a year. In her later years, she moved to Hilton Head with her husband Bill, continuing her art career as a member of the Hilton Head Art League and the Maye River Gallery in Bluffton, South Carolina. She was a devout member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Alexandria for over 35 years before moving to the branch church in Hilton Head. She enjoyed supporting the recruits at the Parris Island Marine Recruit Depot, leading a Sunday church service there each week.  Through her work, faith, teaching, and art, Cora touched many lives. For those who would like to remember her, we invite you to share thoughts, memories, and condolences at [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Art League, a institution she was dedicated to, at 105 N. Union St., Alexandria VA 22314 or online at theartleague.org. I was very sad to hear of Cora's passing. She was such an inspiration to me as an artist and person. I loved her trips to England and will never forget how on my first trip she drove me to the train station in Cheltenham so I could leave the group for a couple of days and visit my grandmother's hometown. And I remember her Aunt Jesse who went to England with us. Riding home from a day of painting in Devon, across the dark Dartmoor and Jesse began to sing "How Great Thou Art" I get chills to this day.

I really got to know Cora in 2004 when she Chaired The Art League Anniversary Celebration and I designed all the graphics and printed pieces. We worked so closely and it was an exciting journey. Everyday—a new idea, a new creative way to look at life. What a special person.

Cora was indeed a wonderful artist and force at the Torpedo Factory. In 1991 I had the pleasure of being on a painting trip with her leadership in the Cornwall area of England. She was a gracious hostess and generous helper. I am sorry for her family's loss.

Some 30 years ago Cora was my art teacher and introduced me to The Art League which had a major impact on my life. She also guided me and many other artists throughout England via multiple Art League sponsored tours. She was a marvelous woman, teacher and role model. I am honored to own her beautiful artwork. She will be widely missed. My condolences to her husband and children.

Cora was a lovely member of our church in Alexandria. She sometimes substituted in the Sunday School so my children and grandchildren also remember her fondly. At Easter when we saw her at church in Hilton Head, we had no idea that would be the last time. We had stopped in at the gallery to see her art, and she was enjoying the visit of her grandsons. We will miss her. Elaine & Chas Harrison

Dear family of Cora. I loved Cora as one of my best friends at church and we always stopped to talk and to catch up about family or our prayerful insights. I will always remember her wonderful, inspiring testimonies on Wednesday evening. When she stood up to speak, I always anticipated them. Throughout our church her tasteful touch, of coordinated, lovely colors and fabrics, is everywhere. We are so fortunate to have had her among us for so long and she leaves behind many good friends and numerous Sunday School students who benefited from her gentle and loving teaching. Susan A. Hobbs
