Edwin "Big Ed" Winfield Spengeman, 84, formerly of Hilton Head Island, died May 3, 2018 in Palm Beach, FL. Born in Jersey City, NJ, Ed was the son of the late Edmund Spengeman and Barbara Drake. Ed received his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame in 1956. Ed enjoyed an illustrious sales career, beginning at Mobil Oil Corporation as a sales manager, and followed by a lengthy career in real estate, most of it spent on Hilton Head. He moved to Hilton Head in the early 1970's and worked closely with Charles Fraser and others who helped develop Sea Pines and Wexford Plantations into the beautiful places that they are today. Ed and his family were members of Holy Family Catholic Church where he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Following the death of his first wife Dorothy, Ed remarried and moved to Boca Raton, FL where he continued his real estate career. Following the death of his second wife, Deanne, Ed moved to Scottsdale, AZ where he worked at Desert Mountain as the real estate sales manager. Ultimately, his travels took him to California, where he continued selling real estate. There, he met and married Carolyn Bryce. After some time in CA, they settled in Palm Beach, FL. To those who knew him, Ed contributed to several causes, including donating money to help build the youth center on Hilton Head. During the summers, you would find Ed and his daughters volunteering at Camp Leo. He enjoyed serving others. Above all else, however, Ed loved the University of Notre Dame, where he established a scholarship in his first wife's name following her death. Ed was an avid member of the Notre Dame Club. Everyone who knew Ed knew that his passion was anything associated with Notre Dame. Ed was predeceased by his parents Edmund Spengeman and Barbara Drake, first wife, Dorothy, his second wife, Deanne, and his son in law James Popp, MD. Ed is survived by his wife Carolyn Bryce of Florida; his three daughters Barbara, Cathy, and Judy; Cathy's husband John, Judy's husband Shawn; and his grandchildren Nicole, Brent, Reed, Kyle, Grant and Noah. A memorial service will be held on June 16, 2018 at 12:00 noon at Holy Family Church on Hilton Head.
