Martha S. Walter Oct. 9, 1924 - June 6, 2018 Martha Stockburger Walter, 93, a resident of Beaufort for many years, passed away on June 8 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, where she had lived for the past year. Martha was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., briefly attended the University of California, Berkeley, and met her late husband, A.J. Walter, in California. They lived in many states over the years, including New Jersey, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, and Colorado. In Colorado, she worked as a proofreader/copy editor for Compassion International, a Christian child advocacy ministry, and enjoyed traveling to Haiti and sponsoring a child there. Martha and A.J. retired to Beaufort more than 25 years ago. An avid writer, Martha had her memoirs and poetry published in numerous church magazines and other publications, including the Beaufort Gazette. She also enjoyed acting in little theater and was an extra in several movies, including "This Is Elvis," "Forrest Gump," and "Forces of Nature." A kind and happy person with a good sense of humor, Martha will be missed by her daughter, Vickie Walter of Maryland; son David and daughter-in law Teresa Walter, and grandson Kevin Walter and his wife Yuka, all of Colorado; grandson Michael Walter of Maryland; and many nieces and nephews. A private service and interment at Sea Island Presbyterian Church, where she was a member for many years, is planned at a later date. 9
