Alfonso Chavez
October 30, 1925 - June 26, 2013
Alfonso Chavez, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend passed away June 26, 2013 at the age of 87.
A native of New Mexico, Alfonso was an all-star athlete at Gallup High School. Upon graduating, he entered the military. He served in World War II in the 15th Air Force as a tail gunner for Squadron 727 flying out of Italy.
Following his honorable discharge he moved to California and began working at the historic Padua Hills Theater in Claremont. As one of the theater's Mexican players, Alfonso was an actor, dancer and musician. There he met his future wife Jessie Vigil, who was also part of the illustrious theater group.
After their marriage and the arrival of their first two children Alfonso worked for Synthane-Taylor in La Verne until his retirement. Alfonso also played and sang with the acclaimed Mariachi del Valle most of his adult life.
Alfonso loved his family, music, word games, gardening and sports. He played basketball with the YMCA League into his 80's and was an ardent fan of the Lakers and Dodgers.
As primary caregiver for his wife Jessie, Alfonso demonstrated profound patience and affection. He was a hero to his family and a good man who will be deeply missed by all.
Alfonso is survived by his wife Jessie, his daughter Terri and son-in-law Terry O'Donnell, son Steve Chavez, daughter Maggie Burgos, daughter Lisa Posso; grandchildren Erin and Carlos O'Donnell, Nicholas Chavez, Emily, Katie and Michael Burgos, Tess Posso; and great-grandchildren Layla and David Burgos. He is also survived by his brother Abran, Frank and Richard Chavez and many nieces and nephews. Nothing is so strong

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday July 6, 2013 from 3-7 at his residence, 9609 Mills Ave., Montclair. (909) 626-5515.
