Charles Robert Erickson Jr. Obituary
Charles Robert Erickson, Jr.
(Bob or "Eric" to friends)
94, of San Clemente, passed away at home Dec. 6, 2017 surrounded by family. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Jan 6,2018, 11:00am, at St. Andrews By-The-Sea, 2001 Calle Frontera, San Clemente, CA. Born in Glendale Oct. 27, 1923 to Charles Robert Erickson & Jeanette Jenkins Erickson, he attended Fullerton schools, then trained as a pilot during WWII, serving out of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. He married his sweetheart Doris, Sept 9, 1945. Serving as a naval pilot, his claim to fame was crashing 5 navy planes! Bob continued in the Reserve until he retired as a Lieutenant Commander.
After the War, Bob & Doris moved to Berkeley, & he finished his degree. Returning to Upland, Bob began a long career with Chaffey High School District—math teacher at Chaffey High; teacher/counselor/Activities Director at Upland High; Asst Vice Principal & then Principal at Montclair High; finally moving to the District Office, as Asst Superintendent over Curriculum.
Bob & Doris bought in San Clemente in 1964, then sold & built their home on Gaviota in 1973. After retirement from the school district in 1985, San Clemente became their permanent home. As active members at St Andrews UMC in town, he played an instrumental role in the building of the new church facility.
Bob & Doris were active with church activities, a regular bridge group, vacations and cruises to many countries with friends; & took each of their grandchildren on a 10th birthday trip—creating lifelong memories for each of them!
Bob was the Patriarch of the Erickson clan—leading by example with his faith in the Lord & practicing that faith by assisting neighbors, friends & family, whenever he saw a need.
Bob is survived by 3 sons—Rick, Bob & Bruce; daughters- in-law Teresa, Teresa & Schelly; 8 grandchildren— Christen Drexler (Jefferson), Laura Taylor (Jeff), Charise Mineiro (Joe), Matthew Erickson (Cassie), Scott Erickson (Polly), Michael Erickson (Brittany), Stephanie Naylor (Blake), and Amy Erickson; & 14 greatgrandchildren— Carter, Joshua,
Emma, Bobby, Micah, Matthew, Nathan, Grace, Noah, Beckett, Piper, Kara, Amaris, & Elijah (#15 due in March to Scott & Polly).
