Dorothy Brannan Calhoun
Dorothy Brannan Calhoun, also known as Dorothy Mae Stults passed away peacefully at her home in Upland, CA on December 27, 2017. She was 104 years old. Dorothy was born December 14, 1913 in Los Angeles, CA to Delmont Clifford Stults and Anna Marie Christensen. She is preceded in death by her parents and husbands.
Her father was a local graphic artist who graduated from a New York school that taught sign painting
among other occupations. For many years he was the only one who did lettering for many surrounding towns. His work includes designing the original artwork for Vince's Spaghetti and Sunkist which is still used today. Some of his artwork has been donated to the Upland Museum. He was also a musician, who played the flute in many community concerts. Her mother was a professional seamstress and she taught 2nd grade in a public school house in Nebraska for several years in the late 1800s.
Dorothy inherited her artistic talents and love of language from her parents. She attended local schools graduating from Pomona College and Claremont Graduate School with a teaching credential. Art and Languages were her major interest. She was fluent in Spanish, with a desire to teach the language. She was accomplished at painting and photography, sharing her work with visitors while hosting many gatherings at her Upland home over the years.
Dorothy was a member of The Ontario Methodist church youth group, the "Questers". Here she met George Brannan and married several years later. He was a successful businessman and Realtor. They were very active in the community. George died in 1982. Dorothy was married four years later to Dr. Clarence "Cal" Calhoun, Dean of Instruction at Chaffey College. Dorothy and Cal were both members of the student body in college over a half century earlier. They were happily married for 14 years, until Cal's death in 2000. They enjoyed traveling and visited all states of the union at various times in their married life.
Dorothy was a member of the Red Hill Country Club, Las Tias Auxiliary, Assistance League of Upland, Republican Woman, San Antonio Hospital Foundation, and the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter DV. Over the years, Dorothy was always kind and respectful, leaving a positive impression on everyone she met.
Dorothy lived a happy life from beginning to end in the lovely cities of Ontario and Upland. Her positive energy lives on and to all her friends, she says "Shalom!"
