Lewis A. Vadheim

1918 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Lewis Vadheim ("Dr. Lew") passed on peacefully of natural causes in his Pomona home of 65 years, on January 5, 2016, a week short of his 98th birthday.

An accomplished surgeon, Lew Vadheim (son of Alfred Lyman Vadheim and Christine Breen Vadheim) grew up in rural Tyler MN and attended the U of M in Minneapolis (undergraduate and medical school). He served the free world as a U.S. Army Captain/Major in World War II, receiving a Bronze Star with clusters for saving lives in the heat of battle.

After completing a surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN, Lew and his wife moved to Pomona in 1951, where he perfected his caring ways, in a career that would span over fifty years as a professional healer. Vadheim was the first Board-certified surgeon on the staff at Pomona Valley Community Hospital (now Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center). He served as Chief of Staff at the hospital in 1961 and served on - and was head of - many hospital committees. He was also a member of the founding Board of the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Foundation.

Vadheim's generosity, skill, and compassion touched many lives, and will live on in spirit. His community service included active participation in the local Rotary Club for over half a century. He is preceded in death by his wife Constance Day Vadheim, and survived by his three children, Constance Vadheim Roth (Jim), Timmer Vadheim (Debbie), and Nancy Muelheim (Richard), along with four grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday February 8th at 11:00 a.m. at the Todd Memorial Chapel in Pomona, CA. 570 North Garey Avenue, Pomona CA 91767. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Tyler HealthCare Center, 240 Willow Street, Tyler, MN 56178 or VNA Hospice, 150 West First Street #270, Claremont CA 91711.
