ELVIRA RUIZ Obituary

Elvira Joby Ruiz, age 90, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, in her home in Brawley, California, where she was surrounded by family members. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a dear friend to many throughout the community. She was born in Brawley on March 18, 1935, and raised by her mother, Jesus Loya and stepfather, Primitivo Loya, where she attended local schools and completed her education graduating from Brawley Union High School in 1953.
In January of 1955, Joby married her high school sweetheart, Robert Acosta Ruiz, upon his return after having completed his service in the armed forces. Their marriage of 69 years has been inspirational and truly amazing. Joby was not only a devoted and loving wife and mother but also dedicated her life to God. She was a compassionate soul, always willing to lend a hand and to serve others. During her lifetime she participated as a PTA volunteer, a catechism instructor & coordinator, a eucharistic minister, sang in the church choir and was recognized as Hispanic of the Year.
She is survived by her brother, Raymundo Ramos; sister, Esperanza Hope Lopez; children, Barbara Esquivel and husband, Richard, Elvia Ruiz-Olson, Sandra Ruiz-Melvin, and husband, Jason, Bob Ruiz, and wife, Olga; along with 13 grandchildren, Mario, Jacob, Jerad, Cord, Richard (Bay), Danielle, Mitchell, Cassandra, Jason Jr., Serena, Stephanie, Ryan, Christopher; and 7 great- grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Ruiz; mother, Jesus Loya; stepfather, Primitivo Loya; son, Michael Ruiz; brother, Leopoldo (Polo) Franco; sisters, Mercedes (Mercy) Kastner, Connie Perez, and Rachel Fernandez.
Services will be held on Monday, July 7, 2025. Visitation and Rosary will be held at Frye Chapel & Mortuary in Brawley from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Margaret Mary Church in Brawley from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial immediately after at Riverview Cemetery.

Joby was a very very very nice person. She was a good friend of my mother Beatrice Arce and my mother's sisters. She read the rosary at all of their memorials and it was a comfort to hear her voice. She is an angel in heaven now.

very sorry i was unable to attend after all. Joby was like a extended mother in the neighborhood when i grew up. I was lucky enough to get to sit and talk with her after we both lost our better half. She was such a wonderful person and she will be missed. I tried to get by whenever i went to town. Not many of the old timers left in the neighborhood but i will cherish her memory.

Mrs. Ruiz was my catechism teacher when I was a little girl. She was a beacon of light in our Catholic community. She was a woman of great faith and taught by example. May God´s perpetual light shine upon her and may she rest in peace with her loved ones. My condolences to her family at this difficult time.

Joby & Robert were my parents' Compadres. When I heard the news, I was so surprised. Just a while ago, I'd see Joby & her neighbor walking along Malan chit-chatting on their morning walk.
I've known the Ruiz's all my life and spent many nights on the Ruiz's living room couch as the Compadres partied into the early morning. Mostly I remember camping & the picnics in Cuyamaca for so many-many summers....the Good 'Ole Days!!
Joby was a pillar, a motivator and very positive person. She was a super-Catholic and inspired so many of us to believe in Jesus and look for a brighter day.
My condolences to Barbara, Bobby, Elvia and Sandra and extended family and friends. Your Mom has gone home. I will miss her very much until we meet each other again. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust....Rest in Peace Comadre.
