Grady Clements

Grady Clements left his family and friends on Saturday, January 26, 2013 from Tennessee Veterans Home, where he had been surrounded by his family and a caring, compassionate staff.

Grady was born to Russell and Ethel Clements of Jackson on July 14, 1924. He was educated in the Jackson schools. He served in Europe in World War II in both the Air Force and Army, and was recalled to service in the Korean Conflict. He served in the 118th Air Force with the rank of Master Sergeant. He remained in the National Guard for many years.

While in college at Union University, he was a member of the SAE fraternity. It was there that Grady met and married Carolyn Dodds of Columbus, Georgia. Grady was employed by Whitlow Sporting Goods, Southern Supply and later became a sales representative for Horner Box Company of Little Rock, AR. In 1972, he and his wife established Clemco Sales, a packaging supply company. Upon retirement in 1986, they made their winter home in Harlingen, TX.

Grady was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Jackson and First Baptist Church in Combes, Texas, and more recently attended East Union Baptist Church in Jackson. In his long and full life he was a former president of both the Lions Club and the Jackson Shriners, a VFW Post Commander for Post 1848, and a 32nd Degree Mason. He also served as a board member of Youth Town of Tennessee for many years, was a member of the Jackson Rotary and active in the Reelfoot Council of Boy Scouts. As an avid golfer, he was a member of the West Tennessee Seniors Golf Assoc. For almost 20 years, Grady and Carolyn together oversaw the Christmas Food Distribution for the Salvation Army in Harlingen. They both loved to travel and made many trips to Europe as well as across the USA.

Grady and Carolyn shared 65 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife and their four children, Joe Clements (Terry), Marty Clements (Wendy), Tim Clements (Lisa) all of Jackson; his daughter, Carole Tackett (Tim) of Dardanelle, AR. He had eight grandchildren, Stacy Warner, Michael Clements, Derek Clements, Drew Clements, Jenny Doss, Colby Clements, Candace Copeland and Brian Johnsey. He also leaves 5 great grandchildren; three nephews; and one niece. Grady was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Visitation will be Monday from 5-8 p.m. at George A. Smith & Sons, North Chapel. His funeral, with Full Military Honors, will also be at Smiths North Chapel at 10 a.m., Tuesday with Rev. Don Thrasher officiating. His Grandsons will serve as Pallbearers and the McDonalds Coffee group, that meant so much to him, will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
