Munroe Erwin Riley

Munroe Erwin Riley, age 91, passed away on July 22, 2014 at Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt, Tennessee, where he had resided since November 2013.

He was born September 29, 1922 to the late Erwin David Riley and Madeline Jeffery Riley in Leamington, Canada. He graduated from Walled Lake High School, Walled Lake, Michigan in 1940 where he played baseball and earned a chair in the Michigan All-State Band.

He entered the Army in 1942 and was assigned to the Fifth Infantry Division Band as a bandsman playing the saxophone and clarinet. In November 1945, he was discharged at Camp Campbell, Kentucky.

He was married to the late Jessie Laverne Lockhart on November 30, 1945 of Erin, Tennessee and returned to Michigan until 1959.

He and his wife Jessie lived in Erin, Tennessee until his retirement and then moved to Jackson, Tennessee to be near their daughter and her family.

In February 2008, he married Ruby L. Arnold of Gallatin, TN, who survives.

Survived by his daughter, Madalyn Ann Riley Williams (Dr. Richard L. Williams) of Jackson, TN; grandson, Richard Thomas Williams and wife Mary Andrea Arnold of Franklin, TN; granddaughter, Lydia Beth Williams Murphy and husband Barton Thomas Murphy of Columbus, OH; great-grandchildren, Allie Harrington Williams, Richard Ryan Williams, Sophie Ann Williams, Riley Grace Murphy and Amelia Morgan Murphy; brother, Laurence David Riley and wife Marilyn of Hawks Lake, Michigan; sister, Susan Jane Riley Sackett and husband Gary of Lavonia, Michigan. Survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was well known for his birdhouses, flowers boxes and window boxes. He never met a stranger and was a friend to all.

A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2014 at 2:30 p.m., in the chapel at George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home North, Jackson, TN. A visitation with the family will be from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service at 2:30 p.m. His ashes will be interred at Bethany Cemetery in Erin, TN later.
