Albert Benton Merkel, Sr.

Albert Benton Merkel, Sr. age 68, passed away peacefully at his home on December 1, 2012 following a 6 year battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Pamela Merkel of Jackson, TN; his daughter, Jennifer Merkel Webb and her husband, Justin Webb of Hendersonville, TN; his two sons, CPT Albert Benton Merkel, Jr. of Jackson, TN and Joseph Merkel of Jackson, TN; his two grandchildren, Nathaniel and Caroline Webb; and his brother, Billy Merkel of Columbia, TN.

Preceded in death by his parents, Johnny Lee and Melvin Merkel.

Albert was born on May 19, 1944 in Jackson, TN. He graduated from Jackson High in 1962 then signed a professional baseball contract with the Boston Red Sox. He then attended Lambuth University where he played baseball. Following his athletic career he attended law school at Memphis State University and graduated in 1975. He practiced law in Jackson for 36 years and was a past president of the Jackson - Madison County Bar Association. In 2010 he was inducted into the Lambuth University Sports Hall of Fame. He was active at Englewood Baptist Church. He was passionate about his family, friends, church, baseball, running, duck hunting, and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Visitation will be on Monday, December 3rd from 4 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday, December 4th at 10 a.m. at Englewood Baptist Church in Jackson, TN. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Englewood Baptist Church with burial to follow at Ridgecrest Cemetery in Jackson.

Pallbearers will be Bobby McWherter, Jr., Jimmy Anderson, Jonathan Anderson, and Spence Barnes. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tommy Bennett, Don Shaver, Charles Ousley, Michael Tabor, Brad Sigler, Charles Patterson, John Douglas, John Hearn, Bill Luna, Hadley Hayes, and Bobby West.

Family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Youth Town of Tennessee, P.O. Box 1385, Jackson, TN 38302.
