Francis Robert (Nanny) Oberlander, 89

Francis Robert (Nanny) Oberlander, 89, of Carroll County, passed away on March 8, 2013, at his winter home in Okeechobee, Fla. Raised in Wolcott, lived in Kentland, Monticello and moved to Punta Gorda, Fla., 1982 to 1992.

Married Patricia Weist and Janet Scott Wilken. He joined the Navy at 17 and went to the Great Lake training center for 7 weeks, transferred to Pearl Harbor and boarded the USS Oklahoma, Dec. 1, 1941. Transferred to USS Marblehead, Oct. 1943, transferred to the USS Bunker Hill. He received several battle ribbons and three Bronze Stars and was released from the Navy on Nov. 13, 1945.

On Jan. 8, 1948, he joined the United Telephone Co. and worked all over Indiana and Florida for 35 years and retired in 1983.

He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Moose Lodge and the Christian Church of Wolcott. He was a fun-loving person who enjoyed a good joke and was well known by many for his incredible sense of humor. We have been blessed to have had him as part of our lives. If you were fortunate enough to know him, then you too would have been blessed.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Janet of Delphi.

Daughter, Vicki Capes Oberlander of Plymouth; Step-Daughter, Jeanette Baldini of Monticello, Stepson, Richard D. Wilken of Delphi; his grandchildren, Kris (Doug) Sarratore, Troy Oberlander, Susan Smith. His Sisters, Gloria Wolf of Lafayette, Eva Snider of Lafayette, Nila (Gene) Morrison of North Vernon. His Brother, Fred Jr. Oberlander of Indianapolis; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Danny Oberlander; and granddaughter, Camma Capes Melroy, March 24, 2013. His brothers, Eugene (Irene) Oberlander, of Wolcott, Glenn (Betty) Oberlander of Wolcott.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 7, 2013, Sunday, noon, at the Eagles Lodge, 2570 in Monticello with Military Honors.
