Donald Bloodgood Obituary

Donald A. Bloodgood, 85

Donald A. Bloodgood was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 3, 1928, to the late Don E. and Margaret V. Bloodgood. His family moved to West Lafayette in 1943 from Indianapolis. He graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1946 and enrolled at Purdue University that same year, becoming a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Don was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army through the Purdue ROTC program in 1950. He graduated with the "Great Class of 1951" with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and served as the 1951 Class President for over 60 years.

He served the United States Army in active duty during the Korean War, and later in the reserves, retiring with the rank of Colonel after nearly 30 years of service. He was inducted into the Purdue ROTC Hall of Fame in 1996. He was humbled by his recent participation with the Honor Flight for WW II/Korean veterans in May of this year.

Don married his wife, Jo Ann Rose Bloodgood on August 7, 1954. Together they were Charter members of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Don was ordained both as a Deacon and Elder, serving as Clerk of the Session. He worked for Ross Gear and Tool Company (later TRW), from 1953 to 1994, retiring as Director of Manufacturing Services.

Besides his family, one of his great passions was involvement with the Boy Scouts of America for over 70 years of his life. He earned the Eagle Scout rank in 1943, and was awarded the Silver Beaver in 1966. He had been a member of the Sagamore Council BSA Executive Board since 1981. Don lived his life by the Boy Scout law, being: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.

Don was a life member of the Reserve Officers Association, serving as the local Chapter President and the Department of Indiana President, as well as the ROTC Chairman and Department Secretary. He also was past President of the Lafayette Chapter of Military Officers Association of America, and was a member of the Indiana Committee for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve since 1985, serving as the State Ombudsman from 1996-2006.

Don enjoyed spending time with his family, and being outside gardening, travelling, fishing and camping. He enjoyed his friends in the Lafayette Kiwanis Club, and he was active with the local chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, where he was a proud descendent of six Patriots.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann and three grown children: David A. Bloodgood (wife Sheila) Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; Daniel W. Bloodgood, Frankfort, IN; and Elizabeth A. Bloodgood, Cataula, GA. He is survived by a brother, Thomas W. Bloodgood (wife Carole Ann) of Greenfield, IN, and a sister Natalie A. Bloodgood of Fort Wayne, IN. He was blessed with three grandchildren, Hilary R. Kotula (husband Alex), Ryan J. Bloodgood, and Patrick T. Bloodgood, and a new great-grandson, Samuel Lenox Kotula.

Those wishing to honor Don's memory may do so by sending Memorial contributions to the Sagamore Council BSA, c/o Don Bloodgood, Memorial Tribute Fund, Sagamore Council BSA, PO Box #865, Kokomo, IN 46901.

Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at the Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Pkwy. West, West Lafayette, IN 47906. Thirty years of friendship and collaboration have sadly changed. Don and I became well acquainted over the past thirty or so years through our work as Purdue class officers, as well as Reserve Officers Association activities in Lafayette and Indiana. Concurrently, we were leaders in the Military Officers Association. Don recruited me to become a volunteer and military liaison officer for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve ESGR). Together, we provided support to the Army Reserve and National Guard units at the Lafayette Joint Forces Armory and participated in state-wide INESGR functions and activities.
The role of soldier often does not cease when we step down or retire. Many continue to serve for a long time afterward. So it was with Don Bloodgood. I am among the many who will miss him and enjoy reflecting on his service and good works while continuing to carry the baton wherever it takes us.
The Turley family is saddened by this loss.

I was in school and scouts with Don's two sons. I got to know Don well, as an adult, in the Lafayette Kiwanis Club. Don had an impact on many, many people through many different connections. I had a very high regard for Don. He will be missed, but remembered by many.

Don was the best neighbor that anyone could ask for. Always stepping in to help my mom without hesitation brought much relief to our family that lives so far from Indiana. A very kind and generous man that will be missed by everyone who knew him.

I knew his scouting contributions through my eyes starting as a young boy of 6 years of age as my father was an assistant scoutmaster. I was witness to the construction of a landmark totem pole that was placed in 1955 or so to greet every scout at Cary Camp of Harrison Trails Council outside of Lafayette, IN. for many years. Don was Scoutmaster of Troop 13 overseeing the carving, painting and raising of the totem pole. I became one of his scouts and watched his influence in Harrison Trails Council and the whole structure of Scouting.
I learned the news of Don's passing tonight and I am greatly saddened, but remember his vast contributions. On behalf of my family, I wish to pass on our condolences to the entire Bloodgood family.

Don was a life long living example of what values the Scout Oath should instill in our members, along with all of the other things he was involved with at an incredible high level. He made a very direct to connect with me as soon as I moved to Lafayette, and I will never forget that. A true patriot, mentor, and friend to all who were lucky to know him, he will be missed.

Don, was my scout leader in Troop 13 where I earned my Eagle Scout rank back in the 60's. Many evenings I was really worried that I could meet his expectations to tie 13 knots correctly...somehow we never failed under his leadership.
My condolences to his family and I thank them for sharing him with so many youth in the Lafayette area.
He truly influenced my values and and how I set goals in my life.

Thanks be to Mr. Bloodgood for service to our country and helping to protect our freedom. May your cherished memories keep him with you always. I was fortunate enough to have had my very first job right after high school graduation working with his Father in Civil Engineering Dept. at Purdue. I never had the pleasure of meeting this Mr. Bloodgood but sounds like he was very similar to Prof.B. Sincere sympathy to family and friends. RIP,Donald.

It was my pleasure to serve with Don both in the US Army Reserves and the ESGR. Don was a leader that one was proud to follow. He will be greatly missed when the 451st Field Depot reunion meets again, as he was always in attendance.

June 23, 2014

It was my pleasure and honor to serve with Don, as an officer of the Reserve Officer's Assosciation. Over the years I have written a lot of military Fitness Reports for soldiers, sailors, marines and membbers of the Air Force in my different Commands. In doing those Fitness Evaluations, you use words that bring out the most outstanding characteristics of a service member. All those most outstanding and exemplary words that I used, applied to Don Bloodgood. He was a soldier who watched his fellow service members back, even in his late years. Fare Winds and Following Seas my friend and RIP!!!

Don was not just a volunteer with ESGR, but the very definition of someone with a heart and passion to help Veterans. We all thought very highly of him. He was always thinking of others before himself. Don was one of the honest and most thoughtful people we have had the opportunity to work with.
He was a tireless volunteer for the Ombudsman program and we could not have done as much without him. He was a great help to everyone who asked. The Indiana Committee also respected him and learned a great deal from him. Thank you for sharing him with us these past several years. We will miss him greatly.

Sorry to hear of Don's passing but now the Boy Scout leadership is completed in Heaven. Don was so good to take my father Wayne Schreckengast to the many meetings for the scouts. Not many people know what an accomplishment the Silver Beaver award is or have even heard of it. Only special people can receive it. My family's thoughts and prayers are with you.

It was my pleasure to meet Donald in preparation for our most recent Honor Flight on which he was an honored Veteran. I am thankful for his service to our country and to his family for their service and sacrifice as well. His memory and legacy will forever live on in the freedoms that my children and their children to come enjoy. His efforts in Korea and the very character of who he was will not be forgotten.
