Arthur Garfinkel Obituary
Arthur (Art) F. Garfinkel, of West Lafayette.
Born November 13, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Livia (Goldberg) and Irving Garfinkel. Art earned his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctorate in Physics at Colombia University. On April 5, 1963, he married the late Doris M. (Remmer) Garfinkel in Germany. Surviving are their two sons, Pete Garfinkel (wife, Karen Garrett) and Tom Garfinkel (wife, Melissa Riofrio), his brother Rob Garfinkel, and sister Myrna Fink.
After graduating in New York, Art moved to Roskilde, Denmark, in 1962 to work in a research lab where he met his future wife. He and Doris moved to Madison, Wisconsin, in 1964, and then to West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1967, where they raised their children. He was active in research and teaching as a Professor in the Physics Department at Purdue University. Art was dedicated to advancing high energy Physics and managed projects at Fermi Lab near Chicago for decades. He mentored numerous Physics students and postdoctoral scientists.
Art loved mathematics, nature, sly puns, classical music and opera. He was an accomplished classical pianist and bassoon player. His family enjoyed his impromptu concerts on the weekend. When a recording or concert was inspiring enough, he would lose himself in the music and his hands would start subtly conducting. Art and Doris enjoyed traveling together and with their families, with adventures in Germany, Italy, Denmark, Colorado, Oregon, Florida, Alaska, Thailand, and the Galapagos Islands.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, April 29th, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., at Hippensteel Funeral Home.
