Audrey J. Roberts Obituary
Audrey J. Roberts

- - Audrey J. Roberts, 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 5, 2018 at University Place in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Audrey was born December 19, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York to Lillian Rothman Flaum and Herman Flaum. As a girl she was a proud member of what would become the "knothole club", a booster group for the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. She graduated from Girls High School in 1945, and then from Brooklyn College in 1949. As a young woman she worked in Manhattan for Life Magazine; Twentieth Century Fox; and Raymond Loewy Associates, an influential industrial designer of that era. Audrey married Albert Roberts on June 17, 1951 in New York City. In 1966 they moved to Madison, Wisconsin with their three young children. Audrey returned to school, and in 1976 completed a Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Wisconsin—Madison. She spent the remainder of her career on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin—Whitewater, where she taught English and was instrumental in starting a Women's Studies program. In 1980, she served as President of the Women's Caucus for the Modern Language Association. Both she and Albert taught, lived, and traveled extensively in Southeast Asia, including three years in Malaysia, a year in Thailand, and a year in Papua New Guinea. Before and after her retirement in 1993, Audrey enjoyed traveling, gardening, bridge, and swimming. She was known in her family for her skill and enthusiasm for Scrabble, Charades, and the New York Times crossword puzzle.

Audrey is survived by three children, Joshua Roberts and his wife Annie Marks of New York City, Matthew Roberts and his wife Elisa Blatteis of Memphis, Tennessee, and Felicia Roberts and her husband Danny Weiss of West Lafayette, Indiana; and a granddaughter, Lillian Blatteis Roberts.

She is preceded in death by her husband Albert, who passed away in December 2016, with whom she enjoyed a marriage of more than sixty-five years. Her older sister, Saundra Polatin, passed away in 1979.

A Celebration of Audrey's Life will take place at a later date.
