Shiva Haghighi

Shiva Haghighi, a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and friend, died Saturday March 22, 2014 at the age of 28.

She was born in Englewood, New Jersey in 1985 and raised in West Lafayette, Indiana since 1986. Shiva's natural charisma, intellect and magnetic personality were evident as a young child and helped fuel many accomplishments during her short but impactful life. She earned a BS in Civil Engineering in 2008 followed by a MS in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Architectural Engineering in 2011, both from the prestigious Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Shiva was also the president of Purdue's Civil Engineering Student Advisory Council and was selected as one of 12 delegates to participate in the highly competitive Transatlantic Program for Young Technology Leaders. She went on to become a project engineer and consultant at Ebert & Baumann Consulting in Washington DC, in 2011.While professionally and academically accomplished, Shiva's legacy will be defined by the lasting influence she had on her family, friends and colleagues.

Influenced by her beloved late father, Kamyar Haghighi, she developed a passionate love for soccer, a sophisticated and rich taste for music, and a compassion for social justice and human rights. She loved liberally and in return, was loved by all. Her infectious laugh and zeal for life was unparalleled and will continue to inspire others.

Shiva is survived by her mother, Atossa Rahmanifar, and her sister, Nina Haghighi (fiancé Tim Wright). Other survivors are her grandmother, Behjat Zand, aunt Taraneh Rahmanifar, cousin Nicola Shahin Haghighi, and many other relatives all over the world.

A service will be held at the Thomas Duncan Hall (619 Ferry St., Lafayette, IN 47901) on Sunday, April 13, at 1 pm. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, online at (as a Tribute Donation) or by check payable to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, 60 E. 56th St, 8th floor, New York, NY 10022, with a note on the memo line "In memory of Shiva Haghighi." A memorial fund has been established at Purdue University in Shiva's name. Donations can be made at or by check payable to Purdue University Foundation, c/o Amy Noah, Purdue University Dauch Alumni Center, 403 West Wood Street, West Lafayette, IN 47907, with a note on the memo line ""In memory of Shiva Haghighi."

Azizan, Ata ye nazanin, Nina joon, Behi joon & Taraneh joon,
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of lovely Shiva. Words are incapable of expressing my deep sorrow for your great, irreplaceable loss. Although I was not lucky enough to see beautiful Shiva, I can imagine how wonderful she was with her bright and shinning eyes and amazing smile (just like you Ata). I share your pain and offer my sincere condolences.
Ata joonam, Shiva will forever be alive in your soul and in the thoughts of those whose hearts she warmed with her love.

You are in me
As a beautiful part of my soul
As the blood in my veins
As my whole emotions

You are with me
Since I open my eyes in the morning
Till I close my eyes at night

If I cannot see you with my eyes
I do see you with my heart

I was about to write you one of my random updates when I heard the news. I cannot believe it. Since our time together in Germany, you have touched me through your vibrance, dependability, and ability to laugh off even the hardest of circumstances. I'm sorry for not following through with the making of our matching "injustice!" T-shirts...

My thoughts and condolences are with your family and many others whose lives you have brightened. You will be missed, celebrated, and remembered.

We are all heart broken and we can not hide it. Minoo, Shaida, Pedram, Bobak, Deanna, and I all are very saddened by this sudden and tragic news of Shiva's passing. Shiva has been and will always be a part of our heart and our family. Her beautiful smiles, her positive energy and outlook to life, passion for humanity, and friendship is all around us. Her passionate support for Barcelona and both Minoo and her teaming up against me (Adel) when Barcelona would play with Real Madrid is always alive in a fun way in our hearts. We just feel emptiness in our hearts. WE all share in your sorrow and our thoughts are with you, Nina joon, and all the extended family. Dear Atossa,

Janet & I always remember the short time that you and Kamyar spent in Maryland (~ 20 years ago) and we had the opportunity to visit couple of times. In our visits, I remember how good Shiva used to play with our daughters and we always remember and treasure those good times. Shiva was so sweet, loving, and caring that time, as a young child, and we all know how she turnout to become such an accomplished individual during her short but impactful life. This sad and tragic news, after the loss of our beloved Kamyar, was so devastating and unbearable to all of us and we hope and pray that the good memories can ease the pain for you and your family.

Love Ali & Janet

Civil Engineering Senior Send off December 2008

I'm still in disbelief. You were one my best friends of college. You were one of the most influential people to break me out of my "shy" self. I will never forget our adventurous costumes for breakfast club at Purdue. I'll never forget sitting in the Fishbowl of CIVIL studying away the night(or rather, me 'borrowing' your notes because I skipped class). I'll never forget right after our graduation when we all closed down harry's, my last night at Purdue... We all sang Don't Stop Believing- Journey. I'll never forget when I stopped by your apartment for the 2012 election and we got to walk to the white house and see the streets crowded with people cheering.

These memories I'll hold with me forever. What a wonderful, compassionate, outgoing, and beautiful person you are. I'll miss you Shiva.

You were the light of my life
The joy of my days
The hope of tomorrow
The beautiful memory of yesterday
How my heart aches
I have no words to express my tears
You are with me
Like a beacon of light
Like an everlasting flower
Like a forever spring
You will be with me always, as my heart, as my soul
I love you Shiva

I have so many wonderful memories of Shiva - from the time she was a little girl and occasionally Dr. Haghighi would bring her to the office and she would want to sit by me at my desk and play in makeup - and then watching her grow-up to become such a beautiful, wonderful person. My heart breaks, but I know her spirit will always be with me.

What can I say but that my heart and soal died with you Shiva.
March 26, 2014

You will forever be missed and treasured by those whom were blessed enough to have met you. I knew you for only a brief time, but you forever enlightened me into how good a person could be in this fragile thing we call life. Your compassion and love was never bounded by religion, skin color, creed or the other silly labels the world puts on us.

I treasure the all-to-short time I got to know and work with you. Thank you for being you.

My thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences are with your family and all who were lucky enough to call you a friend.

Your friend always,

“Like a sculptor, if necessary,
carve a friend out of stone.
Realize that your inner sight is blind
and try to see a treasure in everyone.”
