James R. Swisher

James R. "Jim" Swisher, age 69, of Lafayette, passed away at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, June 15, 2014, surrounded by his family. Born November 13, 1944 in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Albert and Katherine (Taylor) Swisher. He was a 1964 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School and attended Purdue University. Jim honorably served in the US Army from November 1966 to November 1968.

His marriage was to Madonna Herod on February 20, 1965 in Lafayette and she survives. He retired from Landis & Gyr after 30 years and owned and operated JD's Lounge from 1999 to 2013. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Eagles Lodge, VFW #1154, American Legion Post #11, American Legion Post #492, Voiture 40 & 8, FOP, and the Tippecanoe County Conservation Club, where he was a board member. He had a true passion for farming. He enjoyed fishing trips with his sons and truly valued his time playing euchre and golfing with all of his buddies.

Surviving are his two sons, James "Jim" Swisher (wife, Jennifer) and Scott Swisher (fiancée, Teresa Roberts) and his daughter, Christina Nziramasanga (husband, Munny) all of Lafayette; siblings Phyllis Kelly, Joe Swisher (wife, Terri), John Swisher (wife, Ginger), Alberta Cook (husband, John), Linda Maddox, Jay Summers (wife, Carol), and Donna Vogel all of Lafayette, Judy Riley (husband, Ron) of North Carolina and Jerry Swisher of Bradenton, FL. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren Bryce, Andrew, Cameron, Addison, Ellee, Hilda, MJ, and CeCe; several nieces and nephews, and a close family friend, Jeff Schafer. He was preceded in death by a half brother Melvin Swisher.

Visitation from 5-8 p.m., with Rosary at 4:45 p.m., on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2014 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Rev. Father Dan Gartland officiating. Burial to follow at St. Boniface Cemetery.
