Val Means was born June 15th, 1936, in Brookville, PA, the son of Max and Mary Means. He graduated from Brookville High School in 1954, where he had played football and baseball, sports he would actively follow and, in the case of baseball, participate in for the rest of his life. He went on to earn a B.S. degree in Economics and Business Administration from Juniata College in 1958. He then served two years in the United States Army and was recalled again for six months due to the Cuban Missile Crisis.

He was employed as an accountant at Columbia Gas in Pittsburgh from 1960 to 1967. He then spent 27 years at Clarion University of Pennsylvania as budget director, then director of financial management, and finally as University Treasurer.

A member of The Nature Conservancy and the National Audubon Society, his interest in watching and photographing birds led him to decades of commitment to protecting the environment. He was also recognized for his gardening and his extensive model train collection is preserved by the Jefferson County Historical Society in Pennsylvania

He is survived by sister Judy Martz of Brookville, PA, and his children: Ginger Lehr of Brookville, PA, Angela Lewis of Greenvillle, SC, and Al Means of Piedmont, SC; and nine grandchildren who all enjoyed his pancake breakfasts. A cancer and COVID-19 survivor, he died February 18, 2021, in Greenville SC after six years of fighting dementia.
