Jacqueline Jakway Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 28 to Apr. 30, 2008.
Jacqueline Halle Sinks Jakway, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died March 25, 2008, at the age of 79. She was the daughter of the late Nelle Millspaugh Sinks, of Joplin, and the late Alfred Sinks, of New York City, and was born in Puerto Rico in 1928. Her maternal grandparents with whom she lived growing up were the late Judge and Mrs. Frank Millspaugh, of Joplin. Jackie fought a brief but valiant battle against metastatic cancer. An associate professor of anatomy and cell biology at the State University of New York Downstate Medical College, she taught gross anatomy and neuroanatomy for over 40 years from 1967 to 2008. Generations of students benefited from her vast knowledge of anatomy and her enthusiastic teaching style. Jackie graduated from Joplin High School in 1946, earned a BA in biology from Park College in Parkville, Mo., in 1950, and a PhD in anatomy from the University of Kansas in 1958. She did postdoctoral work at the University of Nebraska and in 1961, became an assistant professor of anatomy at the University of Southern California. During this time she married George Jakway, however they divorced after 11 years. In 1967, she moved to SUNY Downstate Medical Center where she remained for the rest of her career. Her travels included many archaeological tours to remote areas unfamiliar to the average traveler. She was an artist and studied painting for many years. An avid lover of music and the arts, she attended performances at Lincoln Center regularly. She is survived by three half sisters, Laura, Monica and Antonia Sinks. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 1, at 3 p.m. at SUNY Downstate. Donations maybe made in her memory in support of Anatomy Education by calling 718-270-6794. Her body has been given to Columbia University.
