John Flanders Obituary

John E. "Mr. Flanders" Flanders, 88, of 66 North Main St., Windsor Locks, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019, at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Windsor Locks, the son of the late Cyrus Glenn and Mary C. (Lynskey) Flanders, he was a lifelong resident of the community and was a graduate of St. Mary School, Windsor Locks High School (1948), and AIC in Springfield. Mr. Flanders taught 8th grade American history at Windsor Locks Middle School for 33 years before retiring in 1993. Teaching was John's passion and he spoke fondly of his experiences and former students. He was also a member of the Suffield Country Club, a parishioner of St. Mary Church, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

John is survived by his sister, Maureen F. Healy of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts; 16 nieces and nephews; and 28 great-nieces and great-nephews. John was predeceased by three brothers, Urban P. Flanders, C. Glenn Flanders, Jr., and Samuel H. Flanders; and his longtime companion, June Steiger.

Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family on Monday, Aug. 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring St., Windsor Locks.

A funeral procession will gather on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.

John Flanders was an amazing teacher. He taught American history classes through a love of our past and a love of students. I still remember so many of his lessons, including the Boston Massacre. He taught us by dramatically telling us stories of historical events. I have modeled my teaching style after his. My students are amazed that I still have retained so much history. I always answer, "That's because I had Mr. Flanders in eighth grade." Through the years, I visited many times and wrote him many letters about how much I cherished his teaching. I have always valued his responses. RIP, Mr. Flanders. You greatly impacted my life.

Please accept my condolences.

I remember him sitting on the top of the desk and teaching his class.

A really nice man and great teacher.

I am saddened at the loss of a good friend. Our friendship goes back to our AIC days. Also, many fond golf memories.

Flanders family, please accept my condolences. Although he was my teacher 54 years ago, I still remember him. The way he treated his students, with respect, and his love for his subject, impressed me then and still.

Sorry for your loss. Mr. Flanders was a great teacher. I did have to write a few DECOS, but in the end it paid off. Rest in peace Mr. Flanders.
