Paul Smaglick Obituary

Smaglick, DDS, Paul R. Died after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family and friends, on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at the age of 61. Beloved husband of Dorothy (nee Keller) for 38 years. Proud father of Katie Urbanek (Mark Van Wolvelaere), Mike (Austin Stuckert, MD) Smaglick, MD and Andy Smaglick. Loving grandpa of John Urbanek and Fritz Urbanek. Son of Paul W. and Suzanne Smaglick. Brother of Mary Smaglick, Richard Smaglick and Julie (Tim MD) Carmody, MD. Dear brother-in-law of Fred (Judie McCoy) Keller. Also fondly remembered by nieces and nephews, Lori (Jason Weiner) Keller and Josef Weiner, Chris Keller, Rosemary Smaglick, Tom, John, Joseph, Allison, Matthew, James, and David Carmody, special friends, Jerry and Ginny Kohlmann, and many other relatives and friends. Paul provided exceptional dental care for over 35 years to the people of Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin at his downtown office. As evidence of his work, Paul was often mentioned in the Milwaukee Magazine as one of the city's top dentists. Teaching and continuing education were an important part of Paul's professional experience. He served in the Department of Restorative Sciences at Marquette University School of Dentistry as a clinical adjunct associate professor and was a long standing member of several dental study clubs and professional organizations. In his free time, Paul enjoyed gardening and travel with his family. He loved classical music, particularly works by Mozart. He also had a passion for military vehicles and took great pride in the restoration of his 1970 M35A2. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 19, at ST. JOHN VIANNEY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1755 N. Calhoun Rd., Brookfield, from 3 PM-4:45 PM followed by the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 5 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Marquette University Dental School or Cancer Research Institute are appreciated. Private interment at St. Mary's Visitation Cemetery, Elm Grove. I was a patient for short time. I had moved only just returned to Milwaukee and reconnected as a patient in 2016-2018. I, recovering from Chemo/Radiation, was not able to respond to the news of Dr. Smaglick's passing. But, I did respond personally and the past few years, Dr. Smaglick is still in my mind and heart. You truly were a beautiful beacon of caring, light, love in this world...We are not the same without You.

Dear Dorothy and family, I just wanted to let you know that I continue to think of Dr Paul. Sometimes it is when I go to a different dentist (no one will again be MY dentist!). I have to push myself to make an apt- I just can't bear the difference and our loss. I go, but am instantly reminded of how completely I trusted Dr Paul, and how suspect I've become. Sometimes I think of him when I truly believe our world has lost decency, respect for all, honesty, humility, and especially perfection and pursuit of a job well done. I'm guessing those aren't just stars we see in the night sky. They are all the angels smiling down with sparkling teeth cause they paid a visit to Dr Paul.

Our deepest condolences to you and your family.
Dr. Smaglick was a wonderful dentist to my husband and myself for many years. He was a warm, caring and excellent dentist. He cared very much about his patients and our lives. We did not hear about his passing until now. We share your sorrow and pain.

I became a patient of Dr. Smaglick 16 years ago after seeing him
listed as one of the best dentists in Milwaukee in the Milwaukee Magazine.
And to my relief, it turned out he really was one of the best! He was a
dentist that truly cared about the dental health of his patients. I felt
that concern immediately. He was a man of such professional pride and
integrity. I knew that I would never be talked into an expensive procedure
that I did not need. Through the years I grew to know a bit more about him
personally. The love for his family, the pleasure he got from fixing old
trucks and his enjoyment in classical music, which I shared. In fact, as an
employee of Mount Mary University, I was able to share a photo with him of
his first piano teacher, a sister at the school. I also had great admiration
for the way he dealt with his cancer in the last year. It took such courage
for him to continue practicing during his treatments. And when I inquired
about his health, he was always very direct and honest about it. That is
why, at my last appointment, I knew I was sadly saying my final farewell.
My sincere condolences to the entire family of this wonderful man.

Dorothy,
My condolences to you and your family.
I took your recommendation to go to Paul for dental care when we were both working to then First Wisconsin National Bank in the mid-1980's.
Paul was always professional and highly skilled in his work to solve my dental problems. We also had brief and interesting discussions about politics and your career progress at FWNB and its subsequent mergers. I especially enjoyed listening to Mozart while in the chair or waiting to start the appointment. He looked good and I commented on the return of his hair . He gave no hint that his actual condition.

Dr. Smaglick will always be remembered as a "mensch" (a person of integrity and honor). He was an outstanding dentist and a great human being. His values were of the highest standard, but he was also humble at the same time. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for his family to lose him at such a young age, but I hope there is some comfort in knowing that there are many, many people who will always think of him and his family with a warm smile and heart.

Dr. Smaglick had been my dentist since I was a child (I am now in my 30s), and he was always fantastic. I have two very fond memories I would like to share.

I was a music major when I first started college. I had to go in to have a couple cavities filled. I was well aware of Dr. Smaglick's love of classical music, but now that I was studying it, it meant more. While he was working on my mouth, I noticed a little stereo in the room with a stack of CDs. I politely asked him if he would play the one with Beethoven's piano sonatas, and he obliged. When his hands weren't in my mouth, we talked music, especially how much we hated Arnold Shoenberg and twelve-tone serialism. It's a strange memory to cherish, but I have cherished it nonetheless.

When I was still in high school, I was studying German. During my sophmore year, there was a (national? State wide? I don't remember) proficiency test language students could take. I scored quite high on it, and was invited to an award ceremony at the high school in Whitefish Bay. I was sitting in the theater, 16-year-old me just happy to be there, and my mom leans over with the program in her hands and says "I think our dentist is the MC". I look at the program and, yep, Dr. Smaglick was listed as the MC for the ceremony. We saw him afterwards and had a nice chat with him. My German teacher got a kick out of it when I told her

My condolences to Dr. Smaglick's family. He will be missed.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Smaglick's passing. He had been my dentist for many years and was the best dentist I ever had. I love how he truly loved his work and talked about how much he loved it. It was obvious in his dedication, care, and demeanor.

Listening to the beautiful and soothing classical music he always had on during working made a visit extra special.

He was an excellent dentist, adored his wife and family and I know how deeply he will be missed by all.

I learned the sad news in the recent letter. So often I thought of calling to let him know that I had to find another dentist since I moved out of the area, but never got to it. I regret that.

His family will have many warm memories of this find man and I and other patients will continue to have fond memories of him.

My sympathies to the Smaglick family. I was a patient of Dr. Smaglick's for the brief period that I worked downtown. His compassion for his profession and his dedication to his patients was impressionable. I will never forget our discussions about Island Lake on the Manitowish chain. There is a peaceful bay with towering red pines just to the south of the entrance to Island Lake that he considered his "slice of heaven".

Dear Dorothy and family,
Ross and I are so saddened by the sudden loss of of our long time dentist and friend. During my last visit we joked that I could skip the x-rays, but just this time. He was so kind, so professional, so caring, so very good at what he did.
We dearly miss him. We are lost without him in so many ways.
Our prayers to you,

I went to Dr Smaglick in the 1980s. I then got married and my husband Joe went to him all those years until he died unexpectedly in 2011. He loved him. I always remember when I went to him how he would talk about his wife and three children. He was very proud and happy with his family. I was very sad to hear that he passed away. My sympathy to his dear wife and family. I never knew he was the same age as me. He was a very accomplished person.

It was so sad to hear of his passing. Outside of the deaths of relatives and friends, I have not been so moved.

I can't imagine a better dentist. His concentration was incredible. He must have gone home exhausted many days.

I needed a dentist nearly 25 years ago. I took Milwaukee Magazine's Best Dentist series and called several offices in the area and his office stood out for the friendliness. His dedication was obvious and he hired wonderful people as well. I have recommended him to so many over the years.

My last memory is the two of us standing in the doorway to the reception area talking. He looked so good after battling so hard - his color was back and he had put on some weight. He said the cancer was back but he was upbeat and was planning on making a family trip this summer.

He will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Smaglick was recommended to me as a dentist by some friends. And Im glad I took them up on their suggestion. As a teacher, we often spoke of the joys and challenges of teaching; his passion for both his patients wellbeing and students education was always apparent. Ill remember most his kindness which shone through everyone working at his clinic. God Bless.

My deepest condolences. I was a patient of Dr. Smaglick. When I went to see him I had not been to a dentist in years and was afraid to go back. He was warm and nonjudgmental. I appreciate the respect and kindness he showed me during the past 10 years. He helped me get my confidence back and allowed me to stop feeling ashamed. I am greatful I got the chance to know him.

Dear Dorothy and Family,

Please accept our deepest sympathy. I know your loss is great, it is my loss also. I regret that I didn't know about the mass on Monday evening. I only learned of Paul's death today from a friend. I see that he will be buried at St. Mary's in Elm Grove. I will be sure to pay my last respects soon. In my eyes, Paul was a good soul, a proud father, certainly a dedicated dentist, and lover of all things German! Dorothy, he held your parents in great esteem. He was my dentist I think since 1978 or 1979 at the office in Shorewood, every visit I left having heard the latest stories of you travels or family. Once he was thrilled to be going home to a Sauerbraten and red cabbage meal. Once he shared with me how he was impressed with the way you could immediately slip into a Bavarian dialect. Paul will always hold a special place in my heart. Er war ein guter Mensch.

Chris and I hope all the memories you share provide comfort for you at this time. We hope these memories provide you with strength and encouragement in the adjustment ahead.

Words cannot do justice to the loss. When I met Paul in the early 1980's when my parents and I were visiting I immediately loved his sense of humor.

During the last two weeks our thoughts were with him and you all. Our most heartfelt sympathies.

I had the great pleasure of teaching with Paul for ten years and enjoying further collegiality as members of the Dental Forum Study Club and can
honestly say that there isn't a dentist or PERSON
that I respected and admired more.
He was a dentist's dentist and a "people's" person.
His work is finished.
Best wishes to his family.
