Ken was active in state and local politics throughout his life and served in the Wisconsin State Legislature from 1964 through 1974. He also served a number of terms as an alderman in the city of Brookfield. As a staunch conservative, he was well respected by members of both political parties. In addition to his involvement in politics Ken was an active and loyal member of both the American Legion and Knights of Columbus for many years. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, golfing, carpentry, playing the violin and gardening. He enjoyed cross country skiing and completed the Birkebeiner ski race numerous times. Ken will be remembered for his strong work ethic, integrity, sense of humor, and ceaseless dedication to his family. Visitation on Friday, April 27, from 10:30AM until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 1PM, at ST. GABRIEL PARISH, 1200 St. Gabriel Way, Hubertus. Burial will take place at St. Hubert's Cemetery.

As Mayor of the City of Brookfield, I wish to express our appreciation for the 10 years Ken Merkel represented this City in the State Legislature and for the 15 years he served as a City Alderman.

I served with Ken on the Brookfield Common Council. Ken was a great help to me as a new Alderman. Although we were not always on the same side of an issue, I appreciated his integrity and consistency in what he believed in. I will always remember his smile and humor as he "instructed" the Council in how he was voting and why.. Kris Schmidt
